Trigeminal neuralgia

I suffer from Trigeminal neuralgia since 2005. For first few years I didn't have to take any meadication. Since 2010 attacks were frequent. I am on Tegretol 50mg am & 50 pm. The side effects are terrible, feeling extremly tired & also feeling low.
Some times I have to increase the dose& it's unberable. Is there alternative?

Try Fleischmann's instant dry yeast 1 tsp aday and 500mg olive leaf extract. These two things really helped me with my trigeminal neuralgia.   Good Luck.

Hi, thanks for your response.I will suggest to my consultant to change me to either NEURONTIN or LYRICA.
Trigeminal Neuralgis has made my life miserable.I have just retired but I don't have the energy to go for walk or enjoy life, because pain starts suddenly.I am thinking of going to India for Ayurvedic treatment. I hope it works.
Thanks again.

Hi and welcome!

I did a search on tegretol at http://www.drugs.com and it came up as an anti-convulsant medication.  There are two anti-convulsants that are frequently used for nerve pain and they are Neurontin (Gabapentin) and Lyrica (Pregablin).  I myself take Gabapentin for nerve pain.  You are first person that I have come across that takes a different anti-convulsant from Neurontin or Lyrica for nerve pain.

Both neurontin and lyrica have side effects but they may be more tolerable than the side effects from Tegretol.  If you go to http://www.drugs.com, you can put in tegretol then neurontin then lyrica and look at the prescribing info for all three medicines to see if the side effects you are experiencing on tegretol are also listed as a side effect of either neurontin or lyrica.  If it is not, then discussing a possible switch to neurontin or lyrica with your doctor might be worthwhile.  Keep in mind that switching medications requires another round of titrations to find out what the optimal dosage is for your pain as typically many doctors start at the lowest dosage and then titrate up from there until you have sufficient analgesia.  I know that the dosage for neurontin goes up to 3600 mg per day; however, the starting dosage is 900 mg per day.

I hope you are able to find an effective medicine that works for your pain and minimizes/eliminates the intolerable side effects that you are experiencing currently.
