can i cancel or suspend my own pm contract?

Hi all, I have a probably silly question but I'm hoping someone can answer it for me anyway. I ve had chronic kidney stones that over the last 10 mos had gotten progressively worse and 7 mos ago my urologist had referred me to a pm doctor because he didn't feel comfortable prescribing narcotics to me long term. I was at that point passing multiple stones a week and new ones were forming just as fast. I recently had another ct and my situation seems to be improving dramatically (knock on wood) and other than 3 stones in my ureter that should pass shortly i only have 1 stone in my kidney that will likely need lithotripsy. So this brings me to my question, I'm going to schedule an appt with my urologist to talk about litho and plan to ask if he can treat my pain as well since it seems my problem is now a short term one. If he feels comfortable with that can i just cancel or suspend my pm contract? I mean would this be an easy thing to do?  I just got my insurance coverage so if i were to see my pm dr i would need to get a referral first and since I'm on medicaid it may not be covered anyway. It just seems like it would be much easier to see just my urologist since I'm approaching the light at the end of the kidney stone tunnel. If I'm a candidate for litho and my 3 stones pass quickly i may be completely stone free in 4-6 weeks. Thanks in advance

Thanks so much for your advice. I definitely want to go about it the right way and do not want to be burning any bridges. I actually really like my pm dr and his staff. They've been wonderful and helpful and I'm not ruling out the possibility of needing them again at some point down the road. I just wasn't sure the best way to go about it so i really appreciate your advice. Thanks again

Good communication is the key to negotiating your situation.

It is better to do this in person -- talk with your pain doctor and tell him/her of your plans, but I'm not suggesting you make an extra appointment.

What you want for neither physician to be "surprised" when alerted that you've filled an Rx for an opioid with another doctor.

After you talk with your urologist, if you no longer have need of your PM, you call to notify the office that you are now being treated by the urologist and want to cancel the controlled substance agreement.

If you need PM again, you can sign another agreement, but make that call before you fill the new Rx and back it up with a certified letter soon after.
