Yep I have another question

Ok I don't think I will ever run out of questions for you great people on here. but here goes my next one.
I am on hydrocodone 8 pills a day 5/500, and like it has been talked about on here I can't even tell I have taken them when they did help before, I have been on them for about 3 months. After my surgery on my mouth the LAST one I was on Percocet and I remember when I was taking them I thought wow the pain has went away that is until the meds ran out and boy was I stupid for thinking that. So I know the Percocet will help me alot with the pain. I have my appointment with the pain dr on Tuesday 2 days away WOOOOHOOOO I am jumping up and down can't you tell lol I don't know how to go about telling him that the percs will work, I don't want to push that and I don't want to sound like a drug seeker for one drug even tho I know that one will help me. I just don't want to be put back on the hydro cause they don't work anymore. How would you guys go about this? I don't want this dr not wanting to treat me cause I asked for a certain drug. Any ideas before tuesday? Thanks alot,
Jamie

Hi Jamie,

You better be going WOOOOHOOOO OVER AND OVER AGAIN!!! You're FINALLY going to make it Girl!!!

If I were you I'd just tell him that your Hydrocodone isn't working for you anymore at all and ASK him if he THINKS if it would be OK for you to try the Percocets as that is what they gave you after your surgery and it ia the ONLY thing that has ever come close to taking away your pain. Be sure he understands that your pain today is MUCH worse than what it was afer the surgery because of the additional damage that was done by the OTHER Dentists thatTRIED to fix the problem.

He might try to up your dose of the Hydrocodone and that MIGHT actually do the job for right now. When they first upped mine it did help at the gitgo but after 3  months of being on the Norco 10/325 instead of the Hydrodcodone 7.5/500 I realized that being on it for 7 years was just too much time to be on the ONE med and my system had "grown accustomed" (almost sounds like I'm going to burst into song - LOL) to the Hydro. If you do find that the Hydro at a hgher dose does the trick then that would benefit you as you would have more choices left to handle your pain down the road. You could always try upping it on the understanding that if it doesn't work after a month or two that you could give the Percocet a try.

That way they would know that you were willing to try what they suggested (EXCEPT: NO NERVE BLOCKS!!).  Stand you ground on that one and just tell him your position on that based on the fact that this is YOUR FACE and you wouldn't be able to eat or talk if ANYTHING went wrong at all and you just CAN'T take that chance!!!

You're going to be FINE!! I can hardly wait until Tuesday after your appointment to hear how it went!!! What time is your appointment, I've forgotten.

Try to get a good night's sleep....Sherry

Ask away. You are always welcome.

I am so glad that the day have finally arrived.

Hydrocodone and apap (acetaminophen) is Vicodin. Oxycodone and apap (acetaminophen) is Percocet. Percocet is approximately 1.5 to 2 x's more potent than Vicodin. However what is effective for one may not be effective for another. Hydrocodone is a Scheduled III narcotic and Oxycodone is a Schedule II. The more potent the narcotic the lower the number in the DEA's Scheduling system.

Hydrocodone is more effective on my pain than oxycodone. Don't ask me why because I don't have a logical explanation for it....other than our systems respond differently. When I had a nasty concussion with head pain oxycodone was more effective on the head pain. So it may depend on the location or type of pain that one experiences.

I wish you the very best in your upcoming appointment with your new PMP. I will look forward to hearing about the outcome.

Peace,
~Tuck

My appt is 9:20 first thing in the moring, Tina said that way I can get in and see the dr and talk to him then get out. I guess he gets really busy during the day. I am going to be there with bells on lol If he does say to up the vicodin I will be fine with that. I think the Percocet I was on is 10/500 so I think that is stronger then the 5/500 that I have been on before and it didn't help as good. I am just looking forward to trying something that might work so I can get back to my life and it won't be all about pain.  We will see. I bet it is going to be like the day before my birthday when I was a kid and I won't be able to sleep lol And I will stand my ground with the nerve blocks, even if I have to change my dr it will break my heart but I can't risk making this pain so much worse then it is.
Thanks so much,
Jamie

Jamie:  I agree with Sherry.  Just explain what you've been on and what has worked in the past.  I don't see that being a problem.  And as Sherry said, they may give you hydrocodone, but up the dosage.  It might work for a while.

Please let us know how it goes Tuesday.  You've been through so much drama getting into see a pain doc and now it's finally here.  It's absolutely unfair all you've been through.   YEAH!!!!  Just one more day.

I would just be honest with the doctor.I think you are on what's called vicodin (hydrocodone) now. Asking to switch to percocet shouldn't be a big deal at all. If you will be on pain medications for the foreseeable future, you should consider longer acting medications. Oxycontin is long acting percocet, Mscontin is long acting morphine, etc., etc.  You are not a drug seeker. you are a person in pain seeking relief. You are a relief seeker!
