This pain is characteristic of cardiac ischemia - lack of oxygen to the heart. In general the pain is not positionally relieved, and usually, but not always dull. This presentation represents a life-threatening situation. A common cause is a spasm or oclusion of one of the main blood vessels supplying oxygen to the heart. If this pain develops do NOT move, do NOT go to the toilet, do not DRIVE YOURSELF to a hospital, but rest and call 911 for immediate transportation to an emergency room.
