continous foot pain after 2 surgeries

4 years ago a podiatrist removed a neuroma from my left foot, pain continued even tho orthotics were used and adjusted periodically.  5 months ago surgery was performed by orthopaedic surgeon, nerve endings from first surgery were not buried and cauliflowered, these were cut and buried, pain began again one month ago, I have flare ups with severe pain as I flex or re-flex my toes, burning and stabbing pain to a point where I cannot walk.  I sit at desk, keep my foot on ice packs all day and when I sleep at night.  I am buying new shoes with wider toe box, dr gave me script for physical thereapy 2 x week (have not started yet), anti-inflammatory and injection one week ago.  I just want to walk without pain!!!!!  Any ideas?

Hello,

Welcome to the Pain Management Form of MedHelp. I am glad you found us but sorry to hear about your foot problems. Pain is terrible but it must be even more disruptive when it effects your ability to ambulate. I am sorry you are in so much pain.

I agree with worried regarding special shoes. There are usually one or two such places in larger cities. I would discuss that with my physician to determine if a specially made shoe may ease your pain. They can be expensive but with a perscription insurance usually pays part of the cost of durable medical supplies.

It does not sound like you are taking pain medications other than antiinflammatories. You may want to also discuss this with your physician as pain medications can ease the discomfort until you are finished with the PT and treatments. If the pain persists you may want to consider a PM Clinic.

I am sorry I do not have a lot of knowledge about foot disorders. I just spoke to my  daughter that is a nurse and works for a podiatrist and has had a lot of additional training in that area. She informs me that whirlpool and other treatments through PT along with new orthotics have often been effective in dealing with the type of pain that you describe. She also stated that often pain medication is prescribed an is effective. So PT may be able to  help with your pain.

Please let us know how you are doing. I will look forward to your next update. Beast of luck and take care, Tuck
