docs wont give pain meds

i'm a 23 year old female with acute pancreatitis, endometrosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and hypothyroidism.  I also have precancerous cells that keep coming back after surgery and are so agressive my doctor has been making me come in for colposcopys and biopsys.  my birth control pills are supposed to make me only have a period one every 3 months of course mine comes and goes whenever it wants.  i have had surgery for the endometrosis but after being on my period for the last month and a half, my pelvic pain is beginning to come back.  i take about 800 mg of ibprofen every 2 to 3 hours.  seems like they are just candy.  all my docs dont really seem to happy with me when i ask for pain meds.  is this normal?

Get a 2nd opinion and google Fibromyalgia. See if you have any of the symptoms besides endo, the cysts and hypothyroid.  Ibeprophen isn't going to cut it and if you have a female doctor SHE would understand better.

bj - are you talking about lupron injections?  Yes, they will throw you into medical menopause, and it's the estrogen suppression that is supposed to keep the endo from growing back.  It's best done immediately after surgery.  I got horrific hot flashes before even arriving home after my first injection, and boy did that stuff mess with my head!  Only managed to do 2 months of injections before calling it quits, and it took several more months to get back to normal.

To the Original Poster, some docs are better than others at treating endo.  You may want to try a different one, or ask for a referral to a pain management specialist, but that is no guarantee of getting pain meds.  You walk into a doc's office demanding pain meds, and you'll get the boot.  Sad, but true.

Im not surprised that you are not getting adequate pain relief.  I am 26 years old and just found a rheumetolgist one year ago that gives me adequate pain relief despite my age.  I do think that it has something to do with age...but mostly to do with the fact that alot of docs just dont like to prescribe narcotics.  And there are obvious reasons.

I agree with Jaybay that going to pain mangement is no guarantee of pain meds.  Many that ive dealt with look negatively at pain meds in fact.

But these are no reasons for you to settle with a doc that is not helping you.

Jaybay - yes i am talking about that - i had laproscopy surgery done and right after that had my period and was in severe pain.  they did the shot treatment for 3 months and it was great - i had no problems with this - at least i didn't have any more pains - just shows how everyone is different -  i also went on another bc pill to help regulate - unfortunately this only lasted 1 year then i had to have the hysto.  mine was a very severe case - my stuff is on display at the hospital for the interns to study (what a thought!)  nothing was cancerous but everything was larger than what it should have been.

lindsey - hang in there - you will find someone that will listen and treat you accordingly.

I would get another opinion - i had severe endometrosis with ovarion cyst - after having 2 kids i had to get a complete hysto - i would see a specialist - they should give you something to control the pain -

Have you had the shots that stop your system?  They give it to you every 28 days - one time on the right rump and next on the left, alternating.  I had this done before my hysto - it was great not having pain/periods.  But i would get another opinion.  you shouldn't be suffering at your age - take care let me know how it goes -
