hydrocodone test

i had a urine test done at my doctors office and it come back positive for hydromorphne i had no clue what the druf was , but now ive learned alot . im on alot of meds and hydrocodone is one. on my lab when i was looking it over it said i was negative for hydrocodone and i take strong doses so i am confused on that im fighting to prove my innoce and save my pride and good name, i also grt nubain shots and the person who did up my paper with my perscriptions did not put that on there , and from my under standing hydromorphone and nubane have the sme chemical make up.even though the shot was a few weeks before the urine test i seem to be under the impression that there is still a chemical that can still be detected, and is it true the hydrocodone metabolizes in the body and it will show a false positive for dilaudid thank you

Hello and Welcome to our Pain Management Forum. I am very sorry to hear that you had a false urine screen. Unfortunately it happens more often than one might think.

There are multiple reasons your test returned inaccurate. Studies prove that the inaccuracy rate is high and usually related to human error. Much has to do with the type of test that is done. Clinics tend to use the least expensive tests that are not as accurate. A blood draw is a much better screening tool.

It's also true that one substance can appear as another. It's my understanding that a small amount of hydrocodone will break down to hydromorphone, when metabolized by the body.  However I am not a Pharmacologist which best understands these actions and is able to explain them in detail.

I wish I could be more specific and give you a concrete answer. I can't. What I do suggest is that you continue to research and use the facts that are specific to your situation Our archives contain numerous discussions that may provide you with some insight.  

Some of our members have personal information on this subject or just plain more information than I do. Hopefully one of them will respond to your post.

The important question is have you or will you be dismissed from your clinic or physicians practice? I certainly hope not.

Tuck is absolutely correct.  Hydrocodone is metabolized by the liver into hydromorphone (Dilaudid) just as oxycodone is metabolized by the liver into oxymorphone (Opana). Also codeine is metabolized by the liver into morphine.

Check out the article via the link below.  It highlights the information that I just mentioned above.  Perhaps you could print it out and highlight the text that says, "A certain portion of hydrocodone is metabolized to hydromorphone, so if you were doing a urine drug test on somebody who was taking hydrocodone you might also see hydromorphone in that person's urine. That's important to know.", to bring into your doctor and hopefully clear your name.  Good luck.
