Hi Ladydi,

I too, want to welcome you to the Pain Forum. This is the best place to come when you are a CP (Chronic Pain) Patient and would like to get some ideas from other CP Patients or to just VENT when we are tired or in pain or BOTH.  :)

I'm truly sorry for what you are experiencing as there is nothing worse the feeling of frustration. I know exactly how you are feeling as do most of the people that post on here but as Tuck said so beautifully above I tto, would much prefer to have what ever degree of relief from my CP that I can get from my meds rather than have the horrible and debilitating pain that i feel without my meds.  I made that decision when I was given the choice of either being able to move around and do somethings or eventually being confined to a wheelchair.I made the decision then to do whatever I needed to do to maintain my mobility.

I'm so sorry for what you are experiencing with your medication. There's nothing worse than when your body doesn't like what's going on with you meds.  Is there any way that you can have a discussion with your PM (Pain Management) Dr. or your PCP Dr. ,whichever gives you your meds, and tell themn what you are feeling and ask him/her of he/she can change something around or adjust the dosages so that you can feel better when on them?

Tuck gave you excellent advice as always about the possibility of trying some of the different options that are available to you (if there are any) that your Dr. might suggest.

I hope that you can find some relief for your pain and for what you body is feeling. I hope that you will keep us informed of your updates and become an active member on here and share that expertise that you have on your  pain with all of us. It's amazing some of the wonderful suggestions that people have given on here that have helped us all at one time or another.

Good Luck and we are looking forward to your next update....Sherry

I felt the same way when I first began taking opiates - about six or seven years ago. I still, at times, want to come off of the opiates because I am afraid they are killing me. My pcp asked me, "What if I told you that they are killing you, would you stop taking them?" He made me think about what my life would be like if I didn't take them. Then he said basically what Tuckamore said about taking them as prescribed. Brenndy had some good advice, too. I have dry mouth from the opiates and have had a couple of cavities because I wasn't doing anything for the dry mouth. My dds told me to get some Biotene and use it. It helps, but as Brenndy said, "good old H2O works best". There are other meds but my advice would be to trust your PMP (if you have a good one) and take the meds as prescribed. Good luck.

Perhaps the original poster is currently having side-effects from opiates that were not mentioned.  Therefore, that could be one of many reasons as to why Ladydi states "they are killing my body."

There are a whole myriad of adverse side-effects when it comes to ingesting opiates; from as minor as constipation, to as serious as xerostomia (chronic dry mouth), which can cause one's teeth to decay and, yes, fall out, due to lack of saliva which breaks down the enzymes and bacteria in one's mouth.  Opiate users:  Keep well hydrated (good old H2O works best) and use a mouthwash specifically for dry mouth, such as Biotene, if you suffer from the latter symptom.

While I understand your frustration, I am not sure how the medications are killing your body.

Has your doctor performed blood, or other, tests showing that the medications are physically damaging you?

Hi Ladydi,

Welcome to the Pain Mangement Forum. I am so glad that you found us and took the time to post. I am so sorry to hear that you are feeling that frustrated with the medications you are taking to control your pain. I hear your concern and anguish in your post.

First let me say that opiates when taken as prescribed should not kill you. There are no statistics to support that worry or concern. In all probability your liver won't be destroyed, your teeth won't fall out and your kidney's won't fail....as long as you have a good PMP and take your opiates as prescribed your problems related to them should be few to none.

We chronic pain patients that have tried all the avenues before we even began taking opiates know that this is probably the way it's going to be until or unless a cure is found for our particular pain producing condition. I am grateful that I have opiates to control my pain. I guess I feel should I be one of the very few that experience side effects it'll be worth it for the years I had to live a half way normal life.

Please don't think I am attempting to dismiss your concerns. I certainly don't mean my response to be taken in that manner.

I do not know of another way to control my chronic pain without opiates. I have tried every other way that has been offered, some that I even researched and found myself. None of them have been effective.

I don't know your source of pain or the level of your pain. Have you tried all the options? Have you sought other opinions? If not you may feel more comfortable in investigating other treatments. Have you been to a holistic treatment center? Have you seen a pain management therapist? Have you tried acupuncture, TENS Unit, massage therapy, bio-feed back and other similar non-prescription pain treatments? If not you may want to consider them?

Many of us have accepted that pain medication will be with us for the remainder of our lives or until and unless a cure is found for our specific pain producing condition. I hope that you will accept our support through your journey of chronic pain. Our members have lots of person suggestions that may be beneficial to you in pain control and management. We all get frustrated. It's normal. We are here to support you.

Others will post their suggestions. I am glad that you found us and hope that you will become active in our community. It has helped me to know that I am not alone and please know that you are not alone either.  Feel free to post often and be active in the PM Community.

My Best to You,
~Tuck

I feel the same way, I hate taking the meds but I have to or I am screaming in pain.  And sometimes I am still screaming in pain even when I have taken them.  I don't have any suggestions however at least I can tell you that you are NOT alone.  I feel the same way!
