immunization to painkillers

What do I do to help or what do I give a person who is in a lot of pain but is almost immune to painkillers?

I've had chronic pain for the last 15 years.  I have severe osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia.  I had a joint replacement that didn't work and had 9 surgeries which also failed but left me with RSD and nerve pain.  That type of pain is very hard to treat.  I use different modalities to help reduce the pain.  People with most types of chronic pain should not expect to get to zero pain.  It's called pain management ... you need to learn how to manage your pain and you need to find a good doctor that will help you with procedures, PT/OT, patches, meds, etc.  It's also best to try to use as little of the narcotic meds as possible due to tolerance issues.

I did not mean to sound so dis-compassionate. I personally have experienced physical disabling pain for at least 1 week every month so much as I can not even get out of bed to even use the restroom. So yes, I do understand how pain can effect an individual. That being said, pain IS an indicator that something is wrong. No one SHOULD feel pain constantly. Chronic pain has been found to have a root cause and often can not be cured or managed effectively. I am so sorry that you have to endure this pain, but perhaps you should take a step back and not judge people so harshly. You have no idea what I have experienced and, similarly, I have no idea what you have experienced. I'm not here to judge, just trying to help people.

SUSAN524 the safest and legal thing to do is take the individual to a Dr. or clinic. Make sure they do blood work to see exactly what is in their system. Also what hurts so much? There is usually a reason pain meds do not work and that is tolerance. If you have not known this person for a long time it is most likely that you are being used.

Great diagnoses as far as pain indicates something is wrong, absolutley brilliant. Unfortunately that is not the, world we live in. Chronic or constant pain does exist. I have been living in pain since 1991. Now at the age of 46 I can barely walk, seldom leave the house, cannot clean and am unable to have a relationship with a woman because they don't understand that constant or chronic pain ***** the life out of you. So you are a moron that has no human compassion, maybe diagnose yourself with assburgers.

For starters, pain is an indication that something is wrong. No one should ever be in pain on a regular basis. Please encourage your friend to seek medical examination.
Secondly, a painkiller is not as simple as ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is simply an anti-inflammatory which often does reduce pain because it reduces inflammation that causes the pain. Actual painkillers must be prescribed by the doctor and only in severe cases as they are very easy to get addicted to and can have serious side effects.
You can help by promoting a relaxed environment. Based on the type of pain, perhaps a distraction is best.

Hello there,  The person who is in pain and it would have to be a lot of pain to warrant pain killers, needs to be seen by their family doctor who knows their medical history. You have to be really careful. It's up to the doctor to prescribe a pain medication and even then I always look up the potential
side effects of any medication the doctor prescribes. My mom needs to
use pain killers because she has chronic back pain as a result of a very
bad fall she had a number of years ago now. It also depends where on
the person's body the pain originates from. This person needs to be seen
by their family doctor and evaluated so the proper pain medication can
be prescribed. Good luck. Eve

Why are they "immune" to pain killers?  Have they been on pain meds at high doses for a long time and now nothing works?  I think you need to give a little more information before anyone could really comment on this.
