left lower back pain when I sit or bend over

I'm 21 years old, I've had a child. I've had minor back pains after labor. But two days ago on sunday night I went to a massage parlor and they gave me a full body massage I've never been to one and it was a little hard but not too painful. The day after I began with a slight left lower back pain when I'd be sitting for about a minute. Today (tuesday) the pain is a lot more painful. When I sit or bend over I feel a sharp stabbing pain, I have to lay on the other foot. I'm perfectly fine while standing and laying down. I don't have insurance so I want to know how serious it is to go to the doctor. Or maybe there's something I can do at home?

Hi jess_q,

I bet your son is a real Cutie-Pie!! :)  I love that age!!

It's even more imperative than ever for you to get that pain taken care of then.  Even though I'm a Grandmother, I still remember how often you have to pick up a 3 year old.  It can be a real "back-killer" even when you don't have pain there.

I'm very glad to hear that your pain is better and that you are going to call the Massage Therapist and let them know what happened to you.  Tuck's correct, they need to be told what happened to you so that they can change whatever procedure they did.

Please be careful and if it doesn't improve daily then please do get it checked out to be sure that there's nothing permanent that might have happened to your back.

Thanks for letting us know what's happening and I hope that you will continue to keep us updated until this is over and you are 100% again!!!

Best of Luck and take care of that Beautiful Little Boy........Sherry  :)

Hi Jess,

Welcome to MedHelp's Pain Management Forum. I am glad that you found us and took the time to post.

Sad to hear that the pain began after a massage that should have made you feel better. First I would call that Massage Therapist. She has insurance or should have it that would cover any of your medical expense. The sooner you contact her the better as she needs to know that this appears to be directly related to the message.

This could be as simple as a muscle irritation or inflammation... or it could be a nerve impingement. It's impossible to guess and really needs a clinical evaluation.

As you mention your recent pregnancy it makes me think of an SIJ involvement. Often pregnancy can affect our SIJ (Sacroiliac Joint). The message could have aggravated your SIJ. When you have SIJ pain it is usually felt in the flank area, buttocks, often down the back of your leg and sometimes in the groin. Sitting for any length of time can be next to impossible and bending can cause the sharp stabbing pain you describe. I am not an expert and this is just possible suggestion.

After you speak to the Massage Therapist I would contact your PCP with any information that the Massage Therapist can/has provide you. If this your SIJ or something similar, the sooner you obtain treatment the better. Left untreated these "treatable" structural issues can become problematic and less treatable... even causing life time issues.

I sincerely hope that you will keep in touch and share with us what you discover. I'll look forward to your updates with interest. You are so young to have this type of pain. Please don't ignore the signals your brain is giving you.

Peace,
~Tuck

Hi jess_q,

First, I want to welcome you to the Pain Management Forum and let you know that we are glad you found this Forum. We are all CP  {Chronic Pain}  Patients that help each other with our own expertise and experiences that we have developed through our own CP Issues.

I want to congratulate you on the birth of your Child!!!  I'm sure you are very excited. I hope you won't mind my asking how long ago your Baby was born?  This could have a bearing on this.

Have you tried sitting in a "hot" (not burning) bath and soaking or laying on a "warm" heating pad and seeing if these things give you any relief?  I hesitate to suggest any type of exercise as none of us on the PM (Pain Management) Forum are Doctors plus the fact is could be something that exercise would make worse.

I'm so sorry that this has happened to you.  I've had a massage before and it shouldn't have been hard or painful.  It sounds as if they might have been a little too rough on you.  I hate to have to tell you this, since you don't have any insurance, but if this pain continues for more than another day or two you really need to go to a Doctor and have an x-ray or some sort of test to see what is going on. At your young age, plus the fact that your a "New" Mommy, you don't want to have to worry about back problems.  You will be liftng Your Sweet Baby from now on and as Your Baby grows and becomes heavier and heavier you need to get this resolved quickly!!

Please keep us informed as to how you are doing and to what your Doctor tells you. I'm sending Good Thoughts your way for a positive outcome.............Sherry  :)
