I'm almost 60, have suffered from a back accident for 30 years now. Compressed T12 with arthritis spreading all over spine  ...have been taking vicodin for many years but am now finding pain is out growing . Compassionate doctors are not easy to find.... as all that bull that put on tv about drug abuse teens have with prescription drugs and how a dogs name can be used to get oxycotin.....what a joke, to those of us that are being told to take muscle inflamatorie drugs to stop constant pain. My question is do the strong drugs like oxycontin or morphine have ingrediants in them that will harm the liver ? like vicoden has acetaminophen. In other words what is a powerful drug that I can take  with the least amount damage to the orgins (liver) ?

Anything metabolized in the liver can harm the liver. And most drugs are metabolized in the liver (hepatic). That even includes fentanyl. The good thing about Fentanyl, along with Opana, Dilaudid and OxyContin is that they do not contain Acetaminophen or Aspirin. Talk with your pain management doctor.

I agree with path91 the duragesic patch has helped me get back to a productive lifestyle.I had just about all the side effects with pills and none with the patch.

have you tried the fentanyl or duragesic patch? i've been on 50mcg for 12 months now and it is the only drug that has given me relief. it is given to opiate tolerant patients. some people benefit from it and others do not just like any medication. if you haven't used it, suggest it to your doctor. my problem is in my lower back, multiple problems. i have been hurting for 20 years, taking vicoden, percocet, etc and finally i asked the doctor to try the patch and he agreed to with no problem. it took about 12 hours after i put the first patch on to feel any type of relief. i change it every 72 hours and as long as i keep it on schedule, i don't have any problems.  best of luck to you and i hope you find some relief from the pain.
