tongue problems

I had bone spurs and a torn  bicept repair on 2/15/12.A nerve block was used.During the followup call I mentioned that the left side of my tongue was numb, and chewing ,swallowing and talking were difficult. The office said to call back if things were not normal the next day.To shorten the story I got an MRI,EKG,and an artery scope. No sign of a stroke was found.Has anyone heard of this? The operation was the left shoulder, and when I stick out my tongue it curves left.

I saw the neurologist today. He's thinking that there was some nerve compression when the breathing tube was inserted in my throat. He still wants another MRI with contrast just to completely rule out a stroke.I feel my speech is improving and swallowing as well so I think in time everything will be manageable. Thanks for your help.

Hi Nick,

Welcome to the Pain Management Forum. No I have not heard of the symptoms you describe as being "normal" following a shoulder/bicep repair. With any surgeries there are risks.

It does sound like you have had the right tests to determine the cause of the tongue numbness. When you say MRI does that mean a Brain MRI and was it with Contrast?

If I were in your situation I would seek a second opinion, with a good Neurologist. I would find one associated with a large teaching hospital or one of our nationally know Clinics. Obviously it is not normal for your tongue to be numb and for it to shift to one side. Don't be dismissed.... get some answers.

I hope you'll keep in touch and let us know how you are doing.

Take Care,
~Tuck
