tooth infection pain

I went to my dentist with a tooth that had been broken for a long time because it was starting to feel not right, kind of a pulsating sensation.  he said there was a pinhole opening to the root but decided to fill the hole and build up the tooth and prepare for a crown.  after the buildup and before the crown (2 days later) I went back because it still was bothering me.  he said the bite was off and filed it down. the next day i was in extreme pain and could not reach the dentist.  the following day i was put on antibiotics and told  I needed a root canal.  i had the first step of a root canal with a temporary filling.  the pain was still excruciating so i went to an oral surgeon who drained it and left a drain in as well.  i had to go to the surgeon twice for this procedure.  it has been 3 days since the second visit to the surgeon and I still have pain but not excruciating.  i am still on antibiotics and i still have a drain in my mouth.  ibupfophen relieves the pain for a few hours and although I have pain, it is not excruciating anymore.  is it normal to still be having some pain?  how long should I wait before having the tooth extracted?  will the extraction speed up recovery from the infection?
