unplanned pregnancy while in pain management

I'm in desperate need of some answers. I just found out that I'm pregnant, by accident of course. I'm in treatment for pain management and terrified of what's going to happen to me and the baby. Is it safe to take Percocet during pregnancy? Is my pain doctor going to throw me out on my butt without anything for pain?
Please, someone help me!

I understand the anguish you are going through. I found myself in your situation 4 years ago. I was going in for facet injections, they always do a pregnancy test on you before the procedure because they use conscious sedation. They came back and told the procedure had to be cancelled because the peg. test was positive. I did not believe them because I was told I could not get preg., I have PCOS, and would need hormone therapy or other means to get preg. I had tried for over 5 years before and could not conceive, so I gave up trying. My husband and I still used protection, but I was indeed preg. I couldn't believe it because I had done a preg test days before because I had to have an MRI and CT and x-rays. I wanted to make sure. So you can imagine my shock when their preg test was positive. I went home and bought a preg test to check myself. It was pos. I sat there, dazed and shocked. I was happy and scared at the same time. I was on all these meds, so I stopped all of them except the pain meds. I went to my doctor and discussed it with him. He swithched me to methadone, he said it was the safest for the baby and would help with my pain at the same time. I never got off the meds, but I did lower the dosage. I did have to go up on it towards the end because your blood volume increases and more of it goes to the baby, and it can feel like you are going into w/d. I debated the whole time wether I should get off the meds or stay on them. I was in a lot of pain so the doctors felt is was more important for me not to be so stressed about everything than to have the baby get all the fallout of the stress and possibly cause pre-term labor. The only problem with being on narcotics is that the baby will be born with drugs in it's system and possibly have to be weaned off them when he/she is born. My baby was fine. She did have to be weaned off, but she was not uncomfortable in the least. She slept through everything. The worse part of it all is the way the nurses and doctors treat you. They look at you like a bad person or a drug addict. They assumed I was a heroin addict because I was on Methadone. Most of the doctors and nurses were okay, but there were a few that gave me the evil eye. I think the hardest part for me was leaving my baby in the NICU for the two weeks it took for them to wean her. They went down too slow in my opinion, just to make sure she did not have any problems. In the end, it was all worth it. I also had to see a high risk OB. They took over prescribing my meds while I was pregnant. They know what to do and have been through this many times with other women. I think the thing that scared me the most was when they told me they had to let social services know. In the end it was no big deal.

So the best thing to do is to let your doctor know what is happening. They want what is best for you. You can work with them on the best plan for you and your baby. There are some meds that are very dangerous to take, especially in your first trimester, it can effect how your baby forms. So, you need to let them know in case you have to stop some of your meds. I wish you the best and congragulations. This will be the beginning of a new and different life for you. It will all be worth it when you are holding your little one in your arms after it is all over. I can't begin to tell you the joy a new little one brings you. I can't imagine living without my daughter. She is the light in my life. At 3 1/2 , she is what gets me up in the morning, and goes to bed exausted everyday. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Good luck and God Bless.          audrea

Hello Beachbride,

Welcome to the Pain Management Forum. I think I should congratulate you on your pregnancy.

I am not sure if your PMP will allow you to take opiates during your pregnancy but from what I have read it is not likely at all. There may be more appropriate forms on MedHelp that will have more information on this issue than this one. There is an OB Forum.

Please don't misunderstand me, you are always welcome here. Maybe someone will have more information than I do. I do know that the other CL on this forum has often said she could not or did not take opiates during her pregnancy. She is out this week or I'm sure she would be responding to your post.

Please call your PMP and inform him of your pregnancy. I'm sure you do not want to hurt your fetus.

Good luck to you. Please share your information with us. Take Care, Tuck
