emotional child

My son, as of late, has become increasingly emotional. We know something is bothering him, but he tells us nothing is wrong. When we do get him to admit that he has a concern, he becomes frustrated and breaks down in tears. Many times, it is over something trivial, like deciding what to eat. Is this normal? He seems stuck. He is so easily frustrated when he tries to explain a problem, and he has anxiety. He constantly apologizes for everything, and this seems to make him feel worse. Is this just a phase?

My first question is how old is your child? He sounds as if he has a problem communicating , is he like this with his Dad aswell, its okay for him to cry when you ask him, persevere and maybe you will learn more of his concern, has he started a new school as that can affect children till they settle down, Hard to make new friends and new Teachers etc any new siblings new Happenings.

There is a book titled "the highly sensitive child" by Elaine N. Aron which might find helpful.  It can be found n-line, in bookstores or perhaps your local library.  You can also find information about this book by googling the title (note none of the words are in capital letters).

You did state that anxiety is part of your son's problem and if so, your child may not know "what" is bothering him.  This is common to children suffering from anxiety as anxiety is a physical and emotional issue as well as mental.  Have you contacted your family doctor for assistance with your son's anxiety?  I assure you, if anxiety is the issue, your son will not outgrow it nor will it go away.  If your doctor is unable to help, it might be wise to get a referral to a medical person with experience in anxiety issues.  Hope this helps ...
