Hi:

Just wanted to make sure that you are asking about bedwetting and not wet dreams.  This section is about nocturnal emissions (wet dreams).  :)

i have a 12 year old son; who wets the bed almost every night.  i have limited him on his fluid intake to none after dinner, no caffeine, going to the bathroom before bed, and I wake him every 3-4 hours to empty his bladder.  He does not tell me when he does this he will not bring his wet things to the laundry room, unless reminded several times.  I do not want to punish him for the bed wetting, but I do want him to help by showing responsibility by helping to prevent and clean up the mess.  any advice will be helpful.

Thank you,

Hello!  I hope the answer to your question isn't too late--but maybe it'll help others.  First, I would make sure that he understands what a wet dream is, along with all of the other age-appropriate things he should be taught.  Then, reassure him that it is OK if he has one--and not to worry about hiding his clothing and bed sheets.

Other than that, not every boy experiences wet dreams.  As for when they start, IF he ever has one, it is usually when he is well into puberty.  As a general rule of thumb, if a boy has developed public hair, then he is able, or will very soon be able, to ejaculate.  However, he might not actually have his first ejaculation--whether it is from a wet dream or masturbation until some time after he has the ability to do so.  But, there really is no clear-cut time that wet dreams would start, as they happen by chance and not on any timeframe, such as when a girl gets her first period.

Hope this helps.
