11 yr old boy becoming clingy with Mother

My son is 11 years old. He is a very good kid, always been well behaved, a rule follower. Normal kid as far as growth and development. He has never been overly affectionate with me but still I would be lucky enough to get random hugs. he never pushed me away if I hugged him but rarely sought me out for affection. Recently he can't stop hugging me. When he does he holds on tight. When I ask if everything is ok, he says "yeah I just want to be with you" He has a 4 year old sister that is very demanding of my attention so I assumed maybe there was some jealousy going on. So I have made it a point to spend more one on one time with him. But I still get the feeling something is wrong. I was sitting on the couch on my laptop paying bills and he climbed behind me and wrapped his arms around me from behind and stayed there for 20 min. Again I said are you ok? He says yes. I don't know what to think he has never been this overly affecitonate, I don't want to sound like I am complaining God knows I love when my children hug me. But this excessive affection is out of character for him. Am I overreacting?

No its not over reacting, has he been watching any programmes on TV that may affect him emotionallyanything new happened in his life ,, I think you hit the nail on the head when you said he had some normal jealousy feelings, you could always ask him ,say something like' this is lovely Johnny Mom is so glad that you want to hug her'see if you get a clue. Perhaps give him lots of hugs back, and accept it whilst it lasts ..,
