Behavioral Problem-2nd grader

My son is 7 1/2 years old.  He will be 8 in a month.  He's in the second grade.  He is getting in trouble in class for being disruptive, talking back (i.e. making excuses for not following directions, fidgeting in his chair, disrupting others, talking back and/or making excuses for things, mocking others, etc.)  I have had this same problem when he was in first grade.  He is a very good boy but very stubborn and it is a struggle to get him to listen to me at times.  I'm a single mother and I am getting frustrated.  He is getting too old for a lot of these behaviors and I want him to be aware that his behavior is not acceptable and that he has to have consequences.  I also want him to be more aware of how his behavior affects him and how others treat him.

I am having the same problem with my 2nd grader. He is being completely defiant at home and at school. I am a single mother as well and I would like to simply enjoy my son instead of "hounding" him all the time. He truly is a great, smart, funny and helpful child, but I've seen his problems with disrespecting anyone and everyone, being difiant, and being irresponsible become out of control. I'm very lost and confused and I don't know where to turn to for help.
