9 yr old with seperation anxiety

My fiance (38) and I (37) have been involved for 3 yrs, of those 3 yrs we have lived together for 1 yr. He has a son of 9 yrs of age. We live 3 hrs away from where his son lives which is with his mother. I don't know if he has insecurity issues or seperation anxiety but his is in my fiances hip pocket constantly. It used to be worse when they both lived in the same town but the behavior continues. He tries to see his son as much as possible. The son sits by the door while he showers. I figure its normal for a child at that age to be in a room by himself but he just isn't capable of it. He basically just freaks out when he is by himself. I don't have a relationship with his mother to know if he acts like this at home. He lashes out at the teacher at school and can't focus in class. I honestly don't have much to do with him while visiting because of the anxiety. I alway thought that he was jealous of me taking his fathers time but I go do my own thing so they can have quality time together. I know we get phone calls once in awhile from his mother because he gets "sassy" and she can't control his temper. I don't have childern of my own I was just wondering if this is "normal" behavior.

These behaviours are common to children suffering from anxiety.  I would not say this is separation anxiety without seeing a physician as these behaviours are common to several of the anxiety disorders and other issues.  Please suggest to your finance that this child should see a mental health professional who is experienced in anxiety disorders as a child neurologist or child psychiatrist or pediatrician.  Children do not outgrow anxiety, nor will it go away; however, children can learn to "manage their fears" with proper treatment.  Hope this helps -
