acetone breath in children

My son is 9 years old, not underweight, acting perfectly normal.  Today we noticed he had very strong Acetone Breath.  My son brushes his teeth twice daily, is very active and eats a normal diet.  Does not overly intake fluids or urinate excessively.  This acetone smell has occurred before approximately 14-15 months ago.  I am a nurse and took him to the ER I work and tested his fasting glucose - was perfectly normal.
I have researched as much as I can but cannot get any clear answers.  I am going to make an appointment with his pediatrician - Is there anything I should have him tested for, just in case my Pediatrician thinks I am overly concerned due to my profession (which I find often).

HI my son had a problem with foul smelling breath. After many tests it showed that it is sulphur. He eats way too many veggies and fruits.. apparently, that is what we were told. It is a build up of all the fruits and veggies he eats.. I dont know if that helps. They siad that because mainly his diet is fruits and veggies that is what is causign it.

Well you have checked all the very important tests that really have ruled out your biggest fear, diabetes, so smelling what appears to be acetone may not really be ketones, he may have strep, tooth infection, gastric reflux, sinus infection etc.
If he is growing well this is a good sign, if your doc wants to complete the workup by dipping urine for ketones this will also reassure folks. Even though he may eat well if he is not hydrated enough he may indeed have more of an evident odor to some.
Lets see what the pediatrician says. Hope this helps(a little)
