my 22 days old baby has congential acyanotic disease

hi,
my 25 days baby boy has been diagnosed with congential acyanotic disease. he was tested with COLOR DOPPLER. the report tells everything normal only the two points were of concern:
1. congential acyanotic  heart disease
2. small ostium secundum ASD, size= 3mm with L-R shunt. QP:QS::1.3:1
   has been reported.
the doctor has told us that till 1yr nothing is to worried, it might be cured naturally. after 1yr. if the disease is not cured then the action should be taken.
   kindly help us on this. since the report has come we are very worried about the boy.hope the things would be normal naturally.
kindly guide us on this, what precaution we should take at this point. and how severe this problem is for the baby.
  please help us we are very worried and tense as the baby is too small to tell any problem. we have to take care of him.
looking forward to your kind guidance.
thanks.

Dear Azzu,

It appears that your son has a small secundum atrial septal defect (ASD), which is a hole in the wall between the upper two chambers of the heart.  There is a very good chance that this hole will close by itself by age 3 to 5 years.  However, if it does not close, he should likely remain without symptoms and do quite well.  These defects typically do not get larger; they remain small or close by themselves.  If it remains small and does not close, I would not recommend any intervention unless he demonstrates that he has had a blood clot go across the hole.  Otherwise, he can be observed.
