Lanugo

Is lanugo common in babies of all races? My baby was born at 40 weeks and has blonde hair on her back & tips of ears. Her father and I are both white.

My son had the same thing. Just take a wash cloth and rub the hair gently when you're bathing her. It takes a couple of weeks but it will go away.

Lanugo hair is normally shed before birth at around 7 or 8 months of gestation.  It is sometimes present at birth and disappears on its own within a few days or weeks and will be shed by 3 to 4 months after birth.  It will be replaced by hair that is finer and more difficult to see, this hair is called vellus.

Lanugo in new born babies can indicate a sign of premature birth.

Lanugo is also common on seals, elephants, fetal whales, and all other primates.

If the baby is healthy and doing well, you have nothing to worry about.

Best wishes.
