my 2 year old son has not been eating much the past 2 days then tonight he started coughing at 10pm then retching but nothing came up he has then cried solidly for 4 hours???

Yes, check with your doctor.  Those on this forum are not experts AT ALL but rather just give suggestions based on personal experience.  good luck to you and hopefully your child is feeling better.  Sick child equals a really tired mom!

I have no doubt that you will trust what your Doctor says from the first and only post you have put here , you havent told us of the other symptoms you dont mention any fever or sore throat , in fact the few details you told us where similar to a minor infection and possible stomach bug ..Hope hes doing okay .

Hope your little one is feeling better. My little guy is 2 as well, and when he stops eating, or is eating very minimal amounts it is a sure sign for us he is coming down with something.  This would also explain the crying.  Him not eating for a few days is not a huge concern, just make sure he continues to drink.  Best things to avoid dehydration are pedialight, juice (you can mix with water if you like), and milk even if his tummy is upset (based on new guidelines from the American Pediatric Association).  Dehydration is always the biggest worry, so watch that he pees at least every 6 hours or so and I always found the best way to check was to swipe my pinky across the inside of his cheek.  It should be nice and wet.  If it's tacky or sticky, then he should be seen right away.  Also, if this persists for longer then 2 or 3 days, he should also be seen.  

As for the debate on strep throat.  I have no idea as to how common it is, but my little man had it around the age of two.  When I took him to the Pediatrician she was not even a bit surprised nor did she say it was unusual.  She called it a "daycare illness".  It's so contagious, so if one kid gets it, they all tend to very quickly.  A brief course of antibiotics quickly cleared it up.  Personally, I would trust what your Dr. says instead of what web pages say.  There is a lot of false info on line for sure, so I certainly wouldn't discount strep.  Could be a lot of things.

I suggest juzzy that you do some research for your self as this has become somewhat of a point to be made  ...there is much online regarding strep throat I think you probably know what is wrong with your child if anything by now ..Hope your child is feeling better ..

In order to be accurate, I do want to correct my above post.  I've had a chance to check and in fact it is not uncommon for two year olds to have strep throat.  Google two year old with strep throat and much data pops up that it happens and not uncommonly.  Since it is contagious, you often see it in daycare facilities.  

I mentioned it initially only because my boys had some very odd symptoms when they've had strep throat and it didn't look like obvious strep throat.  They almost always gag, throw up.   They get head aches.  They don't even say my throat hurts sometimes.  They've not had a fever before and had strep throat.  Classic symptoms include fever but strep doesn't always follow that path. What they do always have is a red looking throat that you can see with a flashlight and often white spots.  That is why a doc looks in the back of your throat.  They then swab it for a test.  

Strep throat is one of those tricky things that it can be difficult to tell when your child has it.  

It's just on the list of things to look for is all.  

I'd take your little one to the doctor to rule all of these things out and then you can figure out what it is.  Hope he is better by now though.  Peace and luck

Oh, well then I guess i shouldn't have posted that.  Thank you for letting me know.  I can't remember when my children first started getting strep throat and was just offering a possible suggestion.  Guess it was wrong.

I see your child is 2 year old ,it is uncommon for children under 3 year old to get strep throat ...

Oh, one other to look into are his ears.  My kids also developed coughs often with ear infections.  They sometimes had a fever but not always and the same with strep throat (which for my kids sometimes didn't have the 'typical' side effects you think of.)  But an ear infection would also keep a child up crying for 4 hours.  peace and luck

He may have strep throat, my kid almost always vomit when they have this.  It also is quite painful and could be the reason for crying.  There are also a lot of nasty viruses that cause a horrible sore throat.  Poor little guy.  

A doctor does a throat culture for strep throat (which while bacterial, IS contagious----  wash your hands.  Viruses are contagious as well, so no matter what, wash your hands a lot).  Might be a good idea to take him to see your doctor.  

The coughing and wretching may be his gag reflex.  My kids AND I have this response . . .  but we actually throw up.  

Maybe go get him checked soon.  good luck and hope he is better soon

Sounds like he has some infection as he is coughing I think it would be best to have it checked out, how is he doing today, there have been many coughs around, possible environmental allergies or a virus.If he is still unwell take him to be checked out ..
