Swelling of eyelid, reddening of eyes

I have a 9 years old son. In the last 3 months we have been witnessing swelling of his eyelid and reddening of his eyes. He almost lost most of his eyelashes (we suspect he pulled them out as he porfessed). He and his older brother used to swim in the pool almost everyday during the past summer. We have not had a chance to take him to an ophtolmologist yet. Is this very serious? Is it infectious? We do not see him complaining about itchiness. He used eye droplets a few times. He watches TV a few hrs a day.
Please give us your advice.

This could be a Sty they do need some medication so I would have it looked at, he may indeed have picked up an infection from the pool he was swimming in ,we also have an eye care forum on Med Help where the doctor there may have some answers..good luck
