What can do this?

So I go to pick my 4 year old up from pre-k today. He was only there for about 3 hours, and was fine before he went. Upon arriving, he told me that his head hurt and he was acting weirdly. I thought that maybe he bumped his head and his teacher acted like nothing happened. I got him in the car and his eyes started rolling in the back of his head and he was in and out of conscienious. I took him to the E.R. just to be safe.

When I arrived, his temperature was 98.0, but within 15 minutes he was throwing up, a fever of 103, along with the chills. He claimed that his head stopped hurting, but what could cause all of this within such a short time?

The ER wanted to perform a spinal tap of which I declined. After doing an x-ray, they noticed a small abnormality in his lung, so they started him on an antibiotic IV just in case. His white blood cell count is fine.

I intend on taking him to his pediatrician tomorrow, but I am very worried. What could this be? I have never seen a child be perfectly fine one minute, and the next he is outright bed ridden.

I am sure you have some answers now, but two of my daughters had febrile seizures. they were sick, runny nose, cough, but no fever, and their temperature went from 98 to 106 in less than 15 minutes. They both had febrile seizures. The first time, they did a spinal tap (negative) I didn't let them with the second one---begnin, but CAN happen again. Hopefully they figured something out for your son.

I'm curious what the doctor said was going on with your son.  Hope all is well.
