What is going on with my 2 1/2 year old (a bit long but need history)

On 12/11, my son threw up in the car (this is the first time he ever threw up, even as a baby).  He threw up twice in the car (4x in each episode) and then again at home two more times.  No fever, acted fine etc.  Next day he was playing, eating etc.  My husband came down with a flu that monday and me that Thursday.  We figured he had a stomach virus which we all ended up catching.  He ended up developing a cold and that transformed into a fever and horrible cough and had two or three explosive diarrhea episodes.  Dr. said it was something going around do the humidifier in the room, Vicks, keep him hydrated, tylenol for fever etc.  I did that but after day 5 of a fever, my son not eating and wanting to do nothing but sleep, I took him to the dr. the Thursday before Christmas.  His oxygen level was low and after 4 breathing treatments, he wasn't responding.  He was hospitalized and it was determined he had pneumonia.  Given a night in the hospital with breathing treatments and oxygen in his bed and antibiotics.  We left the next day and he has been great.

HOWEVER, this past Saturday (1/8) on a trip to Ohio, he threw up again in the car.  My sisters told me that he is just getting car sick (he has never gotten car sick before).  After he got sick in the car, he was fine.  We went to dinner and he ate, we went to a store and he had a great time being bad and running around there.  He is sleeping fine, no fever.  Yesterday my MIL calls me and tells me that he is having explosive diarrhea again and is throwing up "mucusy" stuff.   He has been unusually tired and what I mean by that is ... this child never wants to go to bed and won't tell me he wants to go to bed but when we are doing our "wind down" time, he will just tell me he wants to go in his bed because he is tired.  He is falling asleep without any problem and not doing his usual talking in the crib for 40 minutes, jumping in the bed and his usual antics.  I'm getting concerned that perhaps there is something going on that I'm missing.

Why would he still be throwing up and having horrible diapers.  His diapers have the strangest smell to them....a foul, sour type smell...not the usualy BM smell, if that makes any sense at all?  He has never gotten "car sick" before on all of our outings so I'm wondering if that is really what happened on Saturday.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

when my baby was about 10 months and was having something of what you are describing, they referred him to a specialist and had him tested for CF, thankfully he was negative, come to find out it was the formula he was on.. I know your son isn't on formula but it could be something he is eating or maybe ask about CF especailly if he has already had a bout of pneumonia.
good luck to you

I was confused when you and your husband ended up getting sick also.  And then your son gets sick again (or carsick?) + the intestinal issues.  As for the celiac "classic" symptoms, my kids never fit that either.  But who knows!  I hope you find the answer to the problem.  Hang in there!

I've researched Celiac too thinking this might be something starting but he is not having "classic" symptoms and they aren't consistent, i.e. if he eats something that has gluten, he gets sick.  He does not have the pale BM's, he doesn't complain of abdominal pain, he doesn't have extended stomach and is growing like a trooper.  He has only had two bouts of vomiting and the first one I believe was a stomach flu because we all ended up with it shortly after he did.  I am going to keep an eye on this celiac issue just to be sure because the sour/foul odor is strange when he has the diarrhea.  I am going to investigate this further and I do think a follow up with the dr. is necessary.

Sounds like he needs to go back to the doctor, to make sure they are not missing something.  It is possible to start with something like celiac disease or other problems at his age.  From your description it's hard to tell what he might have.  So maybe take him back to a doctor for a re evaluation.

I forgot to include, and I don't know if this is relevant or not, but he has been expelling a lot of gas lately too.....much more than his usual "putters."  I wonder if he has a belly ache and this makes him feel better?
