7% are "specifically anosmic to the odor of trimethylamine"

Through the years, most of us have observed that many of our friends and family react very little, if at all to us. Conversely, I illicit a full blown allergic reaction in others. Contemporary papers on TMAU still cite this 7% anosmia to trimethylamine (Amoore et al. 1975), meaning that 7% of test subjects in the study could not smell the odor associated with TMAU; the threshold between anosmics and normal participants was "11.17 steps."

The researchers also identified a relationship between anosmia to isovaleric acid, an organic compound with a cheese or foot odor. Interestingly, parallels are drawn between anosmia to trimethylamine and anosmia to male and female pheromones, which posters have noted as behaving similarly to PATM. I think its worth taking a look the relationship between TMAU and PATM, as they both seem to stem from faulty digestion and behave similarly to PATM. I think its quite likely that many humans have "anosmia" to PATM, even though many of us don't elicit a noticeable odor.

The paper is old, but I guess it is legit enough to be cited to this day.

Amoore also looked at anosmia to "spermous" primary odor. Kinda, bizarre but interesting nonetheless.
