20 years old with polycystic ovaries...?

Hello, I'm 20 years old and was recently diagnosed with polycystic ovaries after not having my period for 6 months. I've always been irregular but used to take birth control pills. A year ago I decided to stop taking them and 5 months later I stopped having my period. It's been 6 months now and 3 weeks ago I decided to go to my gynecologist who instructed me to take a regular birth control pill for 6 days to see if I could get my period back. I did everything as I was told but all I got was a little spotting the next day. Besides that, I was losing weight for a fitness competition and noticed that no matter how clean and low calorie I eat or how much exercise I do, it's become extremely difficult to lose weight. My weight goes up and down without any change in my meal plan - I'll weigh 116lbs today and 110lbs tomorrow which isn't the norm for me and my waist is larger than usual. My questions are: should I restart birth control? And could my missing period be the cause of my larger waist and my weight fluctuations?
Thank you in advance
