confused

When I was 17yr old I got told that I had PCOS and wen I was ready to start a family that I had to go back to the consultant who would give me something to help me to concieve. Then wen I was 26yr old I went to my doctors to ask them for the tablets that would help me concieve, but the doctor  said to me who told you that you had PCOS I told them I had test done wen I 17yr old, he Just turned round to me and said no you haven't got PCOS. wen I was 17yr I kept missing my cycles every 2-3 months.and I was put on the pill till I was 22yr old and my cycles came back normal.
me and my partner had been trying for a baby since I was 26 yr old and then Just 2months before my 30th birthday I found out I was 9-10 weeks pregnant I was crying with Joy both me and my partner was. all through  my pregnancy my lil boys heart beat was healthy and strong and I went for my 28 weeks scan they said everything was fine then wen I reached 29 weeks I found out my lil boy had fell asleep :-(   in October 2009.

I then had 3 normal cycles then all off a sudden my cycles are all over the place again missing for 2-3 months, and Im not aloud back on the pill has it could kill me wich the doctor said has I got thrombosis back off my legs with taking the pill last time. then this knew doctor checked back on my notes she said that I have mild PCOS. and wen I mentioned metformin to her she just said lets concentrate on you loseing some weight first. Just want to know dose metformin really work ?

Not sure how I missed this post...but anywho!

1. Metformin, those who have PCOS will help to lose weight IF your watching the foods/drinks your taking in. I lost 62lbs on it.

2. Urine tests for PCOS, tests nothing. You need bloodwork and sometimes ultrasounds.

3. I am really sorry for your loss. Did they test the reason why the babies heartbeat stopped?

4. PCOS varies in ALL women. Some have cysts, some have hormonal issues, and some have both. It depends, how many cysts you have and how many hormones are abnormaly high. So that's why she probably has "mild"...probably not everything is that bad.

I have done a lot or urine tests and none of them lasted a week...
I wonder in my mind what is mild about PCOS (does it have ranges?)

Hormones are that the crux of the matter - that is what messes up the cycle...

I dont know why either and no it wasn't a 24hr one they was for a full week. they might of been testing for other things to I dont know. but the dr Im seeing now told me in my notes that I have mild pcos.

but yes I am going to ask her to test me again to see if anything has changed , but I do know for sure is that since I had my lil angel  my cycle's are missing again for 2months. then wen I do have my cycle Im on for 28 days, it is all confusing me .

I have taken tons of tests - I just don't know what urine tests can be done to predict fertility... so I tend to think that was bogus.

Were they 24 hour urine tests?

Your current doctor should just test you now for everything - like a clean slate. It seems like no one has diagnosed you completely or correctly  yet.

Um - not water - it was the other end... :) or is that :( ?

Hi I am 29 dx with pcos when I was 21 although I had all the symtons from age 17 or so. I have to agree with rumpled and advise u to have all those tests done again. Its been 14 years and alot can change in 14 years. You should def have a rescan to see if you have the pearl like cysts around your ovaries. Miscarrige is also a really big issue that us women with pcos may have to deal with because of the condition, Also Im not sure why your Dr wouldnt at least let you try the metformin?? It has been known to help some women loose weight and even get there cycles more normal. Some women even got pregnant off of it after one month using it. I mean we all are diff and we just have to find what works for us. U wont know if the metformin is your key unless you give it a try. I hate when Drs say loose some weight. If it was that easy to be a size 8 then thats what i would be is what I told to the last Dr. I switched Drs and the new doc gave me metformin with no issue. I stopped it for a while cause I had the upset stomach but to have a baby I would deal with the upset stomach. I just recently started it back and its also suppose to help with avaoiding miscarriage. I say u should def be retested for all those levels again. Baby dust you will get your bundle of joy dont give up!!

Hi Rumpled  no I dont have any copys of the test wat I had done wen I was 17,they are all in my notes @ the doctors. I dont know wat the urine test was for they just asked me to do them ,  all I remember is that I was very upset that they told me I couldn't concieve naturally. thats why I was shocked that I found out that I was expecting in 2009
it took me and my partner Just short of 3yrs to concieve. I have had a thyroid test done and I havent got that. I dont know wether to ask my new doctor if I could have test done again for pcos....do you think they will let test me again after having it done nearly 14yrs ago.

I take it that the metformin tablets are like water tablet's then .....

What were the urine tests for - what hormone? Ah, I have dealt with the dismissive docs too - it is frustrating.

The excessive hair can come from a lot of things - do you have copies of any of your testing? Does it show any LH, FSH, testosterone, estradiol, dhea sulfate testing?

There could also be thyroid issues as that could interfere with the androgens, mess with your period and create the extra hair issues.

I took metformin for a time - I lost no weight but I should have since I was running for the bathroom way way way more often...

PCOS should be diagnosed by not only an ultrasound, but by blood tests. And since those abnormal blood tests can also mean other diseases, they also need to exclude the other diseases. In other words, a diagnosis of PCOS should not be done on one office visit and should take many tests. And just because you have PCOS does not exclude you from having some other issue.

Have you seen an endocrinologist about your hormones? I would get some testing done as having abnormal cycles is a hint that something is off. It may be easy to fix or it may be complex but you need to get a whole picture.

Metformin is a medication for the insulin resistance part of PCOS. If you have that aspect, then it can help - otherwise, it may not - it also can have a few side effects.

I had PCOS until my hyst - I also had thyroid issues and Cushing's - which they all said was PCOS. Make sure you get copies of all your testing - blood tests and scans, and get a complete picture, and see a doctor who will look at all of it to find out the source of the issue. Good luck!
