That said, the question might be more appropriately asked, *should* you get pregnant if your partner smokes really heavy, not can you. Babies born into houses where someone smokes have a higher risk of SIDS, even if the smoker does not smoke around the baby. Just the residue on the person's clothes, skin and around the house is dangerous for the baby. There is also the certainty that a heavy smoker will get a serious illness from the habit, not just a higher cancer risk but emphysema, and all bronchial bugs are harder, and other complications. So you're proposing to bring a baby into a place not healthy for babies and have the baby love someone who is going to be challenged healthwise and have a shortened lifespan because of his habit. How much does this man want a baby? Does he want one enough to quit smoking?
If you continue to try for a year, and don't get pregnant, doctors would classify you (as a couple) as having a fertility issue. But not after one month. You only have about a 20% chance in any given month.
