Everyone is a bit different.  Some see the heartbeat that early, for others not until a bit later.  I saw my sons at 6W2D.  Remember that even with an OPK you still cannot pinpoint the exact moment of ovulation.  All an OPK tells you is that your having an LH surge, therefor getting ready to ovulate.  It can still be anywhere from 12 to 72 hours, with an average of about 24-36.

I am assuming you are counting the 5W4D from first day of last menstrual periodÉ  If you are counting it from time of ovulation, then you will most definately see the heartbeat.  If from LMP, then its possible, but no need to worry if you don`t.

It took a transvaginal for me to see a heartbeat at 5w6d, and even then the technician said that we were really lucky that the baby was positioned where he was, otherwise we wouldn't have heard it at all. We were also fortunate that he was measuring a few days ahead. As it was, it was just one flickering pixel. We were able to see the fetal pole, yolk sac and what looked like a tiny grub (with that one flickering pixel).

if you are not have a transvaginal and only going from the usual external, you may not see much more than a gestational sac, it's possible for the other features to show up faintly, but if they don't it's not an indication of a problem.... just early.

What it CAN tell you is if the baby is in the right place (ie... not ectopic). The rest may take time to show up.

I was told by my RE that heartbeats are usually seen around 6 1/2 weeks and not usually before then.  I saw my dd's at 6 weeks 2 days.  I've personally never heard of anyone who's seen a heartbeat as early as 5 weeks 4 days.  Good luck at your appointment!  Breathe...:)

Congrats to you on your pregnancy!  And I am so sorry to hear of your losses.  I hope this is a sticky little one.  :)

My experience has been that dr's won't even see you until you're 8 weeks, but perhaps your previous history dictates otherwise.  I'm not sure that a heartbeat would be present at that stage, but someone else here can correct that.  I hope the appt gives you peace of mind!

Good luck to you!!!
