Just an interesting FYI....1 out of 4 babies born with Down syndrome (aka Trisomy 21) will have a NORMAL anatomy ultrasound. No structural abnormalites, no "soft" markers.....NORMAL ultrasound.
I agree with cheek3. Children with DS can be the biggest blessing! my mom was a caregiver at a home for children with special needs and we both fell in love with these kids. They can be the sweetest, most loving children ever. Yes, they require more attention but its hard to describe the kind of bond you will develop with them. Again, Im sure everything is okay, but its not the end of the world either. Hoping for an update, we're all here for you!
The DNA is a screening as well. Ultrasound findings along with other markers are considered a positive. The only thing that's really accurate is upon birth in some cases, but CVS and Amnio are invasive.
What type of screening? Quad screen is supposed to be done at about 16 weeks. Was it the cell-free fetal DNA screen? Could you provide more details?
I had the blood DNA test that came back 99% positive for an extra sex chromosome (Klinefelters syndrome). I then had an amnio and that one came back negative. I'm not sure which one is correct and will find out once little one is here. Currently 22 weeks.
You're welcome! And Thanks! And the blood test that I had was the new cell free test which is also know as NIPT where they actually check the baby's DNA in my blood. I was also given the sex of the baby at that time. The only downside is it can take up to 3 weeks to get the results back. But again, I'm sure the counselor will tell your your ratio and options. :-)
If you had the blood test that checks the chromosones in your blood, then it is 99% accurate. My oldest has down syndrome. He'll be 5 at Christmas. He has been the biggest blessing to our family. I was scared out of my mind! But all the worrying I did was for nothing. There are many groups on Fb to offer support our just to browse to get a glimpse of these special kids. You could also check out the blog Happy Soul Project & meet little Pip. If you have any questions, I am available. I'm currently 13 weeks pregnant with my 3rd & would gladly accept another baby with ds into our family!
Thank you wayfunmommy and bonitagirl747!!! Getting ready to leave soon. Best to you both as well.
Im sure everything will be okay :) i declined those tests because I hear about the false positives. Good luck to you and your little one!
If you got results from the quad screen, it is often wrong. If you got results from an actual DNA screen, the results are usually correct.
Thank you angelbaby9_26. I really appreciate you sharing so quickly. I'll stay positive. All the best to you in the months to come.
It is just a screening. Does not mean your baby actually has downs. They can do a blood test now and check so you don't have to risk miscarriage by having CVS or Amnio. I'm sure the genetic counselor will tell you about it. Mine was positive as well, but I've had several tests and Thank God my baby is healthy and don't have any problems . I'm 36 and 7 months now, almost 8 months.
