12 weeks and started to bleed

I went to the bathroom 2 nights ago at 3 a.m. as usual and found that I was totally bleeding! It was light pink and was mostly spotting. It tapered off by the next morning. I went into my doctor's office and had an ultrasound -- everything looks fine. The doctor then checked my cervix to see if it was closed. It was.

So, my question is -- has this happened to anyone else? The doctor said that it was normal, but I'm still freaked. We went through in vitro (we paid for it) and so I'm very anxious already since this is pretty much our "one shot" for biological kids.

Any info would be helpful!!!

Glad it stopped,  and I hope I'm not giving you bad advise here,  but as the baby gets bigger-  not really a concern at 12 weeks I don't think-  but as you progress,  I always heard that sleeping on your back is not good because the weight of the baby...  you know-  I can't remember why they say that-  it squishes something, or the baby could suffocate-  I am really not sure-  perhaps some one else can shed some light on this,  as to if it is dangerous or not-  I just read that and thought about how I was always told not to sleep on my back when the baby got bigger...  anyone??

So many dos and don'ts...  :)  they seem to continue throughout life I guess!!  :)

Thank you so much for your comments! I was sleeping on my side and would wind up on my stomach sometimes....I stopped doing that and am now sleeping on my back. And it stopped!

Thank you, again, for all of your encouragement! :)

YES!!  This is my 3rd baby.  I never spotted a drop with my first 2.  This one has been a whole other story.  I spotted lightly week 5, 9 and 11 (all fine ultrasounds).  Then, while vacationing in Las Vegas a couple weeks ago, I woke up and stood over a  bath rug only to find it heavily spotted with blood (almost 18 weeks!).  Needless to say, off to the nearest ER we went.  Found out I had bacterial vaginosis.  I was immediately put on a weeks worth of antibiotics.  frankly, how I could get a "bacterial" infection was beyond me.  Apparently, it is more common than one may think (esp. if it is really aggravating the cervix) in pregnancy.  They took a simple swab and confirmed it that way, seeing as how my US was fine and my cervix was closed.  Now I have a yeast infection from the antibx...sigh....but enough about me...LOL!  Good luck!  I'm now 20 weeks and no more spotting (for now).

As terrifying as this is to see, it actually happens to about 30% of women.  There are a wide variety of reasons.  Remember that your cervix is very soft right now and easily irritated.  Intercourse is a common reason (although no worries, unless your Dr. tells you otherwise, it won't hurt the baby).  Some women (myself included) have small hematomas that bleed out.  Almost any irritation to the cervix can cause it.  Often Dr.'s don't actually find a reason, but if you had an ultrasound and it was normal, along with a tightly closed cervix, try not to worry (I know, easier said then done). It happens to many of us.

Congrats on being almost through that first trimester!!  Good luck to you.

I've been spotting brown off and on since week 8 (I'm 14 weeks now), and had a big gush of bright red blood a couple weeks ago.  I've had multiple ultrasounds and a cervix exam - all normal.  My bleeding is one big annoying mystery.  I asked one of my nurses how I'm supposed to know if something is really wrong when I'm spotting so often and she pretty much said I will just know...
