2 week old with fever

Rhett was 2 weeks old on Thursday and he got a fever a few days ago. He was running about 99.5 then it went away.  Well, it was back as of last night, ranging from 99.2 to 100.2.  I will take him to the dr. tomorrow but I was wondering if anyone else has any thoughts or suggestions.  I thought maybe I should try to give him some pedialyte or water or somthing besides just breast milk and formula.  Also, I try to keep him cool, opening up the shirt, leaving him in a diaper.  He seems ok, still eating the same and everything. I'm just worried.  Help.

Ok, we went to the doctor this morning.  His temp was 99 this morning.  At first the dr. was like, well, we don't really worry until the temp is 101 or higher but he is definately fighting an infection somewhere.  He checked ears, belly button, and asked us some questions.  He has been eating fine and not really been fussy or anything; his only symptoms have been the slight temp. Plus, he has gained a pound since birth (in 2 1/2 weeks).  Anyway, last place he checked was Rhett's throat and then said "there is the problem, his throat is red".  So, Rhett is on antibiotics at 2 1/2 weeks old which makes me want to cry.  At least we have an answer and know what to treat, I just feel like **** that he has gotten sick already!  Thanks for all the advice and good thoughts!

Hope Rhett is feeling better! I agree I wouldn't give him Tylenol. Better to ask the ped.

ps - I wouldn't give infant Tylenol until you talk to the doctor - the Tylenol will drop the fever but they might want to check him first to confirm the temp - and they may not want the fever masked by the Tylenol - so ask dr first

nothing other then breastmilk - which is majority water anyways - they say never give a newborn water

and I agree with the others - call your pediatricians office - they will either have a pediatric ER that they will refer you to or they'll tell you to go to the regular ER - but in a little one, a fever is a biggie - it was actually on our discharge papers to call if Abby had a fever

Give Rhett a hug from us and get that boy feeling better soon!

My pedi told me under 2 months a fever is considered an emergency.  I would take him to the ER.

Most pediatrician offices have an after-hour nurses line for just this type of thing. It seems to me that you should not give a newborn extra water or pedialyte without consulting a nurse, especially when a fever is present. I am betting they would advise you to give infant tylenol but at 2 weeks old that's where the uncertainty for me lies. Both my kids had early fevers like that and I remember the nurses line being a Godsend.
