It is your choice, of course, but if your doctor can't give you a good reason for doing it other than it is 100% accurate and you'll know for sure - then I probably wouldn't do it. We did the Harmony test. It came back that our daughter is likely to have Turner's Syndrome which is an extremely rare condition. After a lot of research, I've found that the newer fancy blood tests are not very accurate in diagnosing some chromosomal abnormalities and Turners is a common false positive. We had several ultrasounds which showed no classic markers for Turner's. An ambio was offered to us because it was the only way to know 100%, but my assumption was that if she does have Turners it is a mild case and this wouldn't affect our choice of keeping or terminating the pregnancy. So ultimately we decided it wasn't worth the risk of an ambio for the reasons you listed and it would have been an unnecessary risk. If I had gone ahead and done it "just to know" and to put my mind at ease and something had happened to our baby, I would have felt so horrible - that wasn't a risk I was willing to take. It is YOUR choice - not the doctor's.

You can say no, your baby your body. Is there a reason they want/suggest you get the amnio other than age? I had one done with baby 2, I think I was about 16 weeks. For me the basic 1st trimester screening came back with concerns. I opted for the amnio. Yes there are risks, I spoke with my genetic dr who would preform the test, in detail, I felt comfortable with going ahead after I spoke with him. It doesn't hurt (it's more emotional than anything else-just being so scared for the baby & outcome) it's pretty straight forward. My dr watched on the ultra sound during the amnio procedure so he just got the tip of the sack. They told me to take it easy for two days. I didn't do anything for a week, just relaxed, put myself in bed rest, slept as much as possible. I didn't return to working out or walking for 2 wks after the amnio. The hardest part was waiting the 12 days for the results. Good luck!

Speak more about it with doc. I am 36 and pregnant with our first baby. My doc didn't suggest amnio, and offered an additional blood test (harmony scan) I believe it is called, along with second level ultrasound which we are having today. Really, speak with your doc about other options and ask why they suggested amnio.

You absoluetkt can say no. The teat is usually offered if your over 35 and history of DS in the family. Its supposed to 100% accurate however even with that 100% you have a risk of hurting baby if he or she is ok.

I am surprised they didn't offer any other testing? I had to stop reading things online because they scared me. Follow your gut feeling on this one.

You can say no. I didn't get it with any of my pregnancies. It's totally your choice.
