39 years old type1 diabetic

I am a 39 year old type 1 diabetic woman, that has just found out that I am 7weeks pregnant. I was told that I had gone thru early menapause and I could not get pregnant. I also have high blood pressure and neauropathy due to my diabetes.. Is it to big of a risk to go thru it. I have never had children and I have always wanted children. Am I only thinking of myself if I contiue with the pregnancy?

I am 35 year old type 1. May I ask how your friends health is today? I'm considering conceiving but am weighing the risks.

Thank you

The most important thing is to see a doctor ASAP and start working with a good diabetes educator familiar with diabetes while pregnant as soon as possible.

Your target blood sugar range will be different while you are pregnant and it is VITAL that you do everything you can to keep your sugar in range. Also, your body will need more insulin as your pregnancy advances, so you will need to make adjustments.

The good news is that with monitoring, you can have a healthy baby :)

I was PG at 42 and miscarriaed at 8 weeks due to fetal demise.  I went for my annual in June and told I have symptoms of perimenopause (ie hair loss, irregualr periods).  The hair loss ceased (I was under a tremendous amount of stress) and periods returned to regular.  Now I find out yesterday I am PG at 43 yo.  I dont even feel like calling my doctor.  Maybe I will wait a few weeks to see how it goes. I am not sure how to be happy.  How will I tell my mom if it is a viable PG? I might as well be a teenager...

Hi,

I am 41 and diabetic on insulin.  I am 13 weeks pregnant with my second.

No you are not just thinking of yourself.  This is your dream coming true.  It is hard work, but there is so much motivation to achieving it while you are pregnant and then afterwards life is not just about you any more, it's about a wonderful new person.

I'd advise you to eat low carb as this helps so much with controlling blood sugar.  Be very vigilant on your insulin and controls. Work closely with your doctors.

You can send me private message if you'd like to talk more.  Best wishes.

Congratulations.

I agree 100% with trying.  I just wanted to share a story with you about a friend of mine.  Her and her husband tried for years to have children, and finally had beautiful boy/girl twins through IVF.  She too is insulin dependent type 1 diabetic.  She did everything by the book and was carefully monitored.  Not only were those babies born healthy, but she herself had never been healthier as she was so extra careful about her testing, diet, etc.  She breezed through that pregnancy.  And her twins were born at 37 weeks, which is unusual for twins.

When her twins were just under a year, she found herself unexpectedly pregnant naturally, and gave birth to another perfectly healthy, beautiful baby boy.  Another healthy pregnancy and she took extra good care of herself.  All 3 of their children remain healthy.

Congrats on your pregnancy!  Wishing you a healthy and happy 9 months.
