i was on lexapro for years..my first two pregnancies were planned..so i went off months before...this pregnancy..my 3rd wasnt planned...i was taking lexapro for depression and anxiety... and topamax for headaches...probably not recommended but i stopped immediately...my doctor said i could stay on lexapro or go on zoloft which is a common drug during pregnancy. they are both c class... i wanted a b class...so i am on buspar... but i have to be honest...i am barely getting by...its helped alittle...but am considering zoloft...
i was on paxil for many years and went off of it november of 08. i switched to an herbal alternative, 5-HTP, which works very well for me. but my doctors have taken me off of the 5-HTP now that i'm pregnant. i will admit it has been tough going through the anxiety of a new pregnancy following a m/c, without any pharmaceutical or herbal support!!
(if you look at my posts you can kinda tell i have an anxiety issue. ;))
i honestly can't say which approach i think is "better". sometimes i wish for the paxil but so far i am able to function at a reasonable level.
my doctor did say that being on the paxil would pose low risk for me during pregnancy. my dosage was always very low-- 10mg.
if your dosage is high, the newborn could have some minor withdrawl symptoms but that would be it. at least-- that is what my doctor said. i think the research on this varies somewhat.
Yes! I breastfed my last son for two years, and I'm nursing this one as well.
Thanks Tricia. Did you breastfeed any of your babies on the meds?
I was on Zoloft for the last two months of my last pregnancy, and for the last month of this most recent one. I continued to take it for a few months after my last son was born, and I'm taking it now (my new baby is three weeks old). The risks are very low, and the benefits far outweigh the risks. I'm sure your situation is the same. Make sure you discuss the meds with your OB and your psychiatrist. It's important to continue your psych meds, as you know!
Tricia
Thanks. I think Celexa is category C also. I have my OB appt next week so will discuss.Just stressed out as I'm also AMA (42 1/2) so worried about any additional complications.
I assume you're under the care of a psychiatrist? Usually doctors evaluate drugs that are category "b" or "c" as benefit vs.risk. Most likely, your doctor will continue the Celexa. I've taken that drug before I was moved to Abilify which is category 'c'. My doctors ended up keeping me on it for the benefit vs.risk thing.
If you have any concern about this med, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about it. Best of luck to you! - jen
