20 week ultrasound?

How long did this procedure take?

I just went into schedule for next week and they told me the appointment (actual time they are scanning) takes about 50 minutes. This seems excessive use of U/S, but they said they look at everything, blood flow to the ventricles of the brain, all the chambers of the heart, liver, spleen, kidneys......etc. I just don't remeber that with my first child 4+ years ago, I think it was pretty straight forward, maybe 20 minutes.

What is normal? Experiences?

For me the tech did the u/s (not the dr), and after she took all the measurements, she did take her time and get us some nice pics.  We didn't feel rushed through it at all.  Which was nice.  Then once she was done with that, she took the results to the dr.  The dr looks them over, comes in and tells us everything looks wonderful and does a little u/s himself.  I think it is more for face time with the dr than anything else.

It made it nice and pleasent that you did feel rushed through it.

Enjoy and good luck.

I just had mine on Monday, but I didn't keep track of the time. We were there for probably 1 1/2 hours total:  Waiting room first, then a nurse took my vitals, and a little more waiting time (which was not fun because I was required to have a full bladder for the first part of the ultrasound). First part of ultrasound, they need a full bladder to check a few areas. After that part they let me use the restroom. And back to in for the remainder of the ultrasound. Doctor came in during to look over the baby with the tech and talk with us. The total ultrasound time was probably around 30 minutes. The tech checked everything!  Heart, arteries, brain, spinal cord, vertebrae, bones, mouth palette, internal organs, blood flow. So relieving to see baby check out perfectly fine. Good luck!

Mine took 20 min max. She seemed to get everything done she needed in that time.

remember that u/s are 100% safe, there is no risk to them and most of the procedure (if not all) is on the belly vs. transvaginally. The reason why the appt takes so long is because they look at every anatomical part of your baby to make sure everything is where and how it should be. The time spent is worth it to insure your baby is A-OK. Mine actually took 2 hours in total; 1 hour for the u/s, 30 minutes waiting and then 30 minutes with the doctor afterwards.
