Currently taking Clomid for the 8th time...

Hello,

I am 39 years old and trying to get pregnant. This is about the eighth month (on and off) of using Clomid. The first few months I did not ovulate but for the last 2 months I have ovulated. I have not gotten pregnant yet. But lately, my breasts have been really sore, I find it hard to eat sometimes and I just want to sleep alot. I have to go for my blood test to see if I ovulated this month. Is anyone else trying to get pregnant at 39 or am I the only one? Anyone had any success?

Hi there.  I too was on clomid for several cycles about 2 years ago.  In my case I conceive naturally fairly easily, but miscarry frequently.  I was put on clomid to boost progesterone in hopes of helping to prevent that.  I had similar side effects as you are talking about, and they are fairly common.

As I mentioned, I conceive fairly easily on my own, and the time I was on clomid was really the only time I did not conceive.  It seems I was amongst the approximate 20% of the population where clomid has the opposite effect and actually can prevent you from conceiving.  It can create problems with the cervical mucus required to help the sperm move to the egg.  I believe the term they use is hostile mucus. You may want to discuss alternative meds with your Dr.  I am not saying this is what is happening with you, just that it is a possibility and one worth bringing up.

As for conceiving at 39...welcome to the club!  There are lots of us here, many of us older then that.  I started trying to conceive at 37.  My son was born 1 week prior to my 41st birthday.  It was a long and sometimes difficult road, but now that he is here I can tell you he was worth it.  He was naturally conceived.  He is now 10 months old and we recently conceived again.  Sadly we lost the pregnancy, but have every intention of trying again as soon as possible.  If successful, this baby will be born when I am 42....43 if conception takes any amount of time.  So yes, it is very possible.  I agree with Kricket that you may want to consult an RE.  I have only worked with an OB, and that is also a good choice for many.  The wonderful thing is is that there are so many options available to us now...for most of us we can make our dream of motherhood come true.

Good luck and SSBD  (super sticky baby dust!!)

Ivy, I am with you.  I am 38 will be 39 In feb.
I was more aggressive though & went right for IVF. I started last year & still have not had much sucess. I have done 4 IVF's & had 2 m/c from that.

Have you thought about moving on to IUI with injectables instead of continuing the clomid?  Are you already seeing a reproductive Dr or still with your obgyn?  If not seeing RE yet, I recommend it highly.  This way they can check to make sure everything is going the way it should.  Have you had an HSG (hystroplingogram) test done yet?  This will check to see if your tubes are open.

Best Wishes to you!!!!!!!
