Genetic Testing

Congrats to all the moms to be and those who've delivered.

Just returned from my first visit, didn't find out until last week that I was expecting (14w6d). Because if my age my Dr has ordered a blood test to screen for down syndrome and tubal (something). Also set an appointment for a more detailed ultrasound. Has anyone had this? How did it turn out?  I am a little concerned. There's no family history of such but still a little worried.

Thanks ladies!  My Dr just called and said he does want to perform the panorama. Any idea how long it takes to get those results?

I had it done with my first and will be getting it done this week with my second. Bc of my age, 36 and now 38, I wanted peace if mind. Although the quad screen only gives you more specific odds of your child having downs, trisomy or spins bifida rather than a definative yes or no, you can make an informed decision, if your screening yields high risk percentages, to have an amnio to find out for sure. It is nerve wracking, if you're a worrier, waiting for the results, but once you get them back it helps reduce a lot of the will my baby be healthy worrying through the rest if your pregnancy.

Don't worry about it. I had these tests done too. It's a little nerve wracking waiting for results, but it's also peace of mind. Drs just highly recommend these tests because of our age. Like you, I have no previous family history of downs or tubal defects.
The best test out there for downs is the panorama test...it tests for a slew of other things too, but it's the most accurate. You can also find out your baby's gender with 99% accuracy...if you want to know.

I got this screening at 15 weeks, had nothing to do with my age. It was an optional quad screening and my insurance covers it, so I had it. Mine was negative, though I didn't expect to have any issues. At 20 weeks they do the anatomy ultrasound, which may be the detailed ultrasound you mentioned. Sounds like normal stuff to me. Good luck!
