Had both a CVS and Amnio?

I have had a CVS before and am just curious if I can expect to feel the same way after having an amnio? e.g. abdominal cramping/general soreness.
I am having an amnio this monday and am just trying to prepare myself mentally. I would assume them to be similar. . .

Righteo I am well versed in both now!! The amnio was certainly much quicker than the CVS however I did find it a little painful. I avoided looking at the needle but did look at it on the screen briefly. A couple of seconds after it went in I witnessed something falling in a floating like manner that fell onto the baby. That freaked me out a bit as she was looking at the needle and didn't see it on the screen and wasn't able to tell me what it could have been. Whilst she was changing tubes or god knows what she bumped the needle and that really hurt. Was so glad to have it over with. I actually had more cramping with the amnio than the CVS - guess everyone and every scenario is different but I have had nowhere near the same "abdominal stiffness" post procedure. I found it a little difficult getting up and down after the CVS - and that hasn't happened this time. I had it done at lunchtime and was still cramping at 1am this morning.  I nearly rang the hospital (and probably should have - but opted for sleep instead) as I was starting to wonder if the cramps were actually contractions, I had a light pink rash over my entire belly, was a little hot and clammy and to top it off had bouts of dizziness! I have woken up this morning with the rash having lightened and feeling mostly fine otherwise. Baby has also been wriggling like mad so I know he's fine! Just wished the father (my ex) hadn't turned up and had a go at me straight after. Was a really stressful day.

Do I ever agree the anticipation was way worse then the procedure.  I too am super needlephobic...they made me lay down for quite awhile afterward because I am a fainter when it comes to needles.  I didn't this time though.  I think that's why I laughed when he said he was in the sac.  I was so scared I didn't sleep for nights beforehand, and it just was so easy, it really was.  Out came all that nervous energy and hence the laughter.

I don't have any info on the CVS except that I know the risk of complication is somewhat higher, although not significantly.  One of the positives about it is that it is done much earlier then an amnio, so less waiting to get answers.

I had amnio w my daughter... It's not so bad, it is the windup to the actual test that gets you really uptight! I for one, am so needle phobic that it's in my chart.  But we women are strong and when it's important we do it... even after they scare the bejesus out of you. Remember the odds are small.  And it is quick. I got crampy about 4 hours later and then sailed right on... Anyone got info on the cvs test?

I can guarantee the moment it's in I'm going to to think of you laughing now!! I imagine that would be a trifle dangerous and not part of the now "stay very still" criteria!!

Right - I think I'm more relaxed now?!?!

I will tell you that I am the biggest baby out there when it comes to needles.  Hate them!!  My experience with amnio was actually pretty easy.  I have had worse getting a needle at the dentist.  I had my husband with me holding my hand, and I just didn't look.  When the Dr. said "ok, we are in", I actually looked at him and said "seriously, that's it?" and started to laugh (I do not recommend laughing..lol).  I felt some mild pressure while they withdrew the fluid, and it was over.  I did nothing for almost 3 days I was so afraid of complications.  I laid around, took it easy and honestly, no big deal at all.  I would do it again with my next pregnancy.  Good luck!!  I am sure it will go fine, and just think of the result.  The unknown is always so much scarier then the reality!!  Let us know how you do!!

The more I think about it, with the CVS I felt a pumping tugging sensation - which given they are taking a tissue sample may account for the tenderness after - the amnio is just getting fluid so it would make sense to be a tad more pleasant (maybe). . .

Perty I have to admit I'm sorry but I did lol when I read you fainted - I'm prone to laughing on innappropriate occasions and fainting on the odd occasion too!! The older I get the more squeemish I'm getting. Then it starts playing with your head and whammo! I was worried I was going to to that with the CVS. Felt a little uneasy to start with but held it together. A yr ago my son had to have stitches in his eyebrow and it was just me and the doc in the room. I was helping hold him still and close to the action - next thing I know I'm the one on the emergency bed with the doc holding my legs up in the air and my son sitting up mid stitch thinking mum had died and the doctor pleading at him to lie down!!!  I saw him a few weeks ago with my other son (ear infection) and when my son threw up in the consulting room we couldn't help but laugh and agree that I should go on his black list. The poor man!

Back to topic. . . so no - I will NOT be looking at the needle :-)

In my experience, the amnio was a cinch. Not painful at all, just an odd sensation. I didn't have any pain or cramping after. Probably a good idea NOT to look at the needle! Good Luck, you'll be fine and you'll get to see your bub again!
