Has anyone ever went to a Maternal, fetal medicine (high risk) doc before??

Hi ladies:  As you all know I am 35 & pregnant with twins so I have to go to a Maternal, fetal medicine (high risk) doctor in a couple of wks.  I am nervous about the whole thing.  I know that they are going to do an u/s on the babies to check everything out but I am really scared.  I just wanted to know if anyone else has ever went to a high risk doctor before.  I am just worried about the whole thing too.  If any of you ladies have some advice for me I would really appreciate it.  Thanks.

Well, everything went well today.  They first had me in to talk to the genetic counselor and she just took my history, asked me if I knew why I was there and also talked to me about how I felt about amnio, what the risks were, etc, etc,.    Then I went for an ultrasound, where they measured and I got to see the babies.  Then the MD came in and introduced himself and talked to me and said we will be monitored and he is waiting for the second blood test to see if my "risk factor" went down and then we can decide on whether I want to do an amnio or not.

I hope this helps with getting an idea about what to expect.  I do have to say that I went to a large women and childrens hospital that we have in town, but I am sure it is the same at the smaller clinic depending on where you go.  Let me know how things go!!

Thanks for your advice.  This is actually my 2nd set of twins.  My first set of twins is 10 years old now, boy/girl.  My husband and I conceived them naturally without any use of IVF drugs.  I have my appt on Nov. 5th.  I wish it was next week already.  My first set of twins came at 34 wks so I am hoping that these babies will hold out longer this time.  I am surprised that I didn't have to go to a high risk doc last time but I guess they figured that I was younger then too.  They have to check the back of the babies heads and all so I am a little nervous about that.  My husband's like oh don't worry there is nothing to worry about the babies are fine.  I am still nervous.  It's a natural feeling.  I will let you guys know how it goes.  Wish me luck.  Good luck to all of you ladies and your new little ones.  Thanks again.

I only saw the high risk Dr. for my amnio, but he was wonderful.  Really seemed to know his stuff.  Sounds like you will be in the best possible hands.  Good luck to you!

I had a high risk pregnancy too and saw maternal fetal medicine doctor too.  I also had my regular OB and they worked together.    THey were monitoring me a lot with ultrasounds and fetal biophysical profiles.  I had to also go twice a week for non-stess tests.    By seeing the high risk doc, they just see you more often and monitor you more closely and probaby do more testing than if you had a regular pregnancy.   Your twins will probably come a bit early.  Make sure you have them and a hospital that is great with multiples and or has a level III NICU unit.   DOn't be nervous.

I am also high risk and have been seeing two wonderful maternal fetal medicine doctors.  Do  not worry things will be almost the same as an OB visit except they are more attentive to everything  and are more knowlegdgeable.  Not only am I seen way more frequently than a regular OB but they monior everything more closely.  Bloodwork, urine, bp ultrasounds, meds everything.
Good luck and I hope you both have wonderful experiances

Hi!!  I am pregnant with twins also and I am going to the maternal fetal doc tomorrow!!!  With my regular doc I had a nuchal trans. test and the measurment of the neck was fine, but my bloodwork came back a bit high, so off I go to the maternal fetal doc.  I will let you know how things go and what to expect.  I know I have an 8:30 am appt. with the genetic counselor and I have a 10:30 appt with the Doctor.  I have no idea why I am going to see the genetic counselor first, maybe they just prepare me - I have not idea really.  I will keep you posted!!!    I had IVF when I was 39, and just turned 40 so I am not surprised my rate came back at 1 in 32 for possible chromosomal ab., but I had a friend whose number was 1 in 10 and she had a perfectly healthy baby boy!

Is this your first?
