I can hear your concern and it's good you are really looking into it...It sounds like you are really responsible. I have been taking Cymbalta 60 mg for a few years. If I am not on an SSRI, I get panic attacks and feel generally anxious/scared for no real reason. I wish I could figure out a way to not take any at all- after all, they didn't even have these drugs when my grandma and great-grandma were having lots of babies. I have been worried about taking drugs too, and trying to get pregnant. Does you know about cymbalta and/ or SSRI's in general and their effects on ttc? I hope you find many answers to your questions. Thanks! L
Hi, I can help answer that. I was put on prozac about 2 months into my preg. due to preg. depression, and my o.b. said she has many patients on it, and that they don't stick to the fda categories anymore but instead study the documented problems with any meds. Also, any meds that have not had human testing are automatically put on fda category c, just in case, not because they have proven problems. I am taking 60m/day of prozac and am at the end of my second trimester. My o.b. is keeping me on this med, because it is not safe to take preg. women off of it - it has very nasty withdrawal. I had been on vistaril, but found out that it is basically benedril, so just buy that instead to help me sleep.
thank you all for your input I really appreciate it.
I agree 100% with everything Spade said. Many women take drugs for depression during pregnancy with no harm at all to the fetus. As she said, find a Dr. that will work with you. Good luck!
There are many medications that can be taken while pregnant to control anxiety and depression. Wellbutin and Prozac are both in the same drug class ( class C) which means they can be taken when the benefits outweigh the risks. That said, Prozac has been around a lot longer than wellbutin and is generally considered safe since a lot more is known about it and it's effects during pregnancy.
Depending on your medication combination and the amounts of each that you are on it's possible you may be asked to tapper a little either during the first trimester of pregnancy or during the late stages of the third trimester. Only your dr can determine that (it's very possible this won't even be needed).
If your dr tells you to wean off your meds completely before pregnancy then find a dr who will work with you and address your needs.
BTW: vistaril is a pregnancy safe version of Xanax that can be taken during pregnancy to help with panic attacks, it's also used to treat insomnia and allergies. I took this periodically during pregnancy for anxiety and have seen others in these boards use this medication and every one if us has gone on to have healthy babies.
I believe I read somewhere but dont quote me prozac and wellbutrin are ok during pregnancy as are other SSRIs, TCAs like Tofranil and pamelor are considered safe to use during pregnancy. I am sure your doctor can share better insight. Good luck
