MTHFR and Miscarriage

I will have a few postings today b/c I'm working my way through some tactical issues. When I met with my Doctor last week, he told me to do an internet search on "MTHFR" and miscarriage. With the last miscarriage we did a large amount of blood tests. I assume from his request, that I've tested positive for this condition or gene. I will ask him to be more specific on my next visit. But he'd mentioned that since I'm wanting to understand and research to help myself, that I could start with that. He'd said that sometimes new ideas pop up on the internet but he's doing what he believes to be right ... a prenatal with a lot of folic acid in it and then 3 pills of folic acid each day. I was also taking B-6 and B-12 and was on natural progesterone cream.

Anyway, I thought I'd start here with my search.

so sorry to hear about your losses!!!    I had 4 miscarriages before this pregnancy (hopefully lucky number 5!! - currently 27 weeks!)   i ended up testing positive for MTHFR as well.. i had two copies of the "bad"  part of the gene apparently, which makes me in the most severe of cases... however i have a friend who tested hesterozygous (just one copy, so it may or may not show its traits) for MTHFR and she took just an asprin and folic acid and her 5th pregnancy was a success and she now hwas two beautiful children , thanks to the asprinand folic acid! : )
the first month i took asprin (81mg) folic acid (4mg + 1mg thats in the prenatal), b6 (50mg) and B12 (1000mcg i think!) we got pregnant---- all natural.. after over a year on fertility meds- getting pregnant and miscarrying. i immediately started heparin injections as well, and so far so good!! so turns out it was just what we needed  : )

they are showing studies now that asprin is helping people that even aren't testing positive for blood clotting disorders, so its usually especially recommended after multiple miscarriages... the increased folic acid is also showing great results even in people that test negative as well.. So its defintely worth a try, and most likely wont hurt anything! : )   GOOD LUCK!!! i'm excited that they might have found an answer and a solution for ya! : )

I had 4 mc before my DD was born.  After the 2nd we did all the testing and MTHFR came up for me as a possible cause.   I also was diagnosed with PCOS and put on metformin to help with my insulin levels.

I added extra folic acid and B6 & B12 to my prenatals in addition to baby aspirin.  After my 4th mc, I switched doctors, stayed on that combo and added progesterone 3 dpo and got a positive.  I stayed on the metformin and progesterone thru 12 weeks and the others thru term - and my DD is now almost 14 months.

If you are positive for MTHFR you should ask to have your homocysteine levels checked -that is the hormone effected by the gene and can lead to cardiovascular issues.  Mine was fine but we added the baby aspirin and folic acid as a precaution.  I can't say for sure which med worked for me or if it was the combination or part of the combination, but something worked.  I am now pg with #2 and on the same meds and hoping that this one sticks too!  I'm only 4w3d so I am way too early to know anything for sure yet.

Good luck to you....
