Metformin during pregnancy - anyone take it?

Hello! so we are 33 weeks pregnant... i have been on metformin twice daily the entire pregnancy. I was originally on the metformin after goign through all the fertility treatments, and i had mild pcos. We were supposed to stop it at 12 weeks, but thats when i started bleeding (due to placenta previa) and we didnt want to "rock the boat" so i have just stayed on it. I have had hyperemesis the entire pregnancy too, my dr thinks it MIGHT be related to the metformin, and thinks i shoudl stop it at this point..... but i'm terrified to change anything!!! Anyone take it during pregnnacy, when did you stop, and when you did stop did you stop cold turkey or taper down?   I would much rather be sick the next month and have a healthy baby than risk harming her in ANY way! my dr is really good though, and says its not doing anything good at this point. ANY opinions/info graetly appreciated! thank you!

thank yall so much! yea i know now they are keeping people on it the whole pregnancy sometimes.. I did taper down and am off of it now.. but still sick it seems.. sooo i dont think that was the cause of the hyperemesis, unless i[ll get delayed relief.. but it is nice to not have my blood sugar drop even more when i'm sick..Thanks for your opinons and info!

I was also on it during my first pregnancy but stopped it when I was 12 weeks along.  I also used it for fertility and because of previous miscarriages.  I stopped cold turkey and had no side effects.  I understand your concern but at 33 weeks stopping it would very likely have no effect on the baby.  I really think your baby is fine at this point and you don't have much to worry about.  I would listen to your OB in this case.

with my last pregnancy we needed fertility to get pregnant and my RE had me on it for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. but thats all...here i am pregnant again (naturally...lol )...so i didnt use it this time around...and i have to tell you...i think my OBGYN or some doctor...i cant remember .....said that alot of doctors keep their patients on metformin most of the pregnancy...that there have been good side effects from it. i can understand your concern and how you are nervous to go off...but like you said he is a good doctor and i am sure he knows what he is doing...try not to worry...wishing you a healthy remainder of a pregnancy..

I was on it in the beginning but my doctor had me stop it because the chances of birth defects that it could cause to the baby, especially in my 2nd trimester.  I work in a hospital and I pulled it up on our medex system which is where it will tell you about every drug on the market and the effects that it will do to every body function (reproductive, nervous system, liver, heart, etc.).  It tells you all the research that has been done on it and it's not good to take while pregnant especially in the 2nd trimester.  I stopped mine almost as soon as I found out I was pregnant.
