I am rh- and was not given the shot after my first pregnancy. It wasn't till I got pregnant three years after with twins and went in to the hospital for a cerclage that I found out I had already been sensitized. I had regular checkups with my specialist and Doppler readings done every other week to check to see if either was developing any signs of anemia. I had my twins at 37 weeks and to our surprise one of them was born severly anemic and had to have a double blood transfer/transfusion. She is doing just fine today but I am now pregnant with my third pregnancy and really scared to find out what will happen at my appointment with my specialist. I am 20 weeks and have an appointment scheduled tomorrow. Hopefully every thing works out but I feel like I would not be going through this if the hospital and drs would have given me the shot after my first pregnancy.
Oh yeah...melimeli is right. Im sorry, too, if I confused you. Only the antibodies that attack positive blood types will be affected!
:-)
it doesn't eliminate all antidodies... haha. sorry for the confusion... just the ones from another blood type
you will be fine for this baby it will be if you want to have another that your body could reject it.. you really need it... it is no big deal..
No, you do not want the antibodies, because it could hurt a future child. Normally antibodies are a good thing, because it helps ward off certain diseases, but in this case it could attack your next baby, simply because he/she has a positive blood type. Form what I've understood, it's a routine shot for anyone who is rh-.
I'm sure your doctor will be able to explain it better ;-)
Good luck on the 6th!
wouldnt i want antibodies to be in my system to fight things such as other foreign things to keep me safe? If I get this shot won't this stop? Concerned even more. I made an appointment for the 6th of nov to discuss my concerns on it but in he mean time i wanted to find out from you guys what you did. thank you
I'm actually not rh-, but for a while I thought I was and did a LOT of research on this. From what I've understood, not getting the shot will most probably not have an affect on this pregnancy (if this is your first). HOWEVER, without the shot, you could face major complications in subsequent pregnancies.
Basically, during labor, there's a high chance that your blood and the baby's blood mixes, and unless the baby is also rh-, your body will then build up anti-bodies. This can then be a big problem if you have a second child, as your body could start attacking a future pregnancy.
What the shots do is keep your body from building these antibodies in the first place...and therefore protecting future babies from being affected.
If I were you, I would definitely get the shots!
I am also Rh- and have had the shot. The only reason the shot is given is if you bleed (spot) at all through your pregnancy. If not, then the shot is not recommended until you are ready to have your next child.
That is the way both my RE, and the doctor who administered the shot explained it to me.
Hope this helps
If you are rh- you really need the shot!! The only way you would be ok without it is if the baby has the same rh as you and there is no way to know that without testing during pregnancy. It's too big a risk to not have it done. It is to protect your baby from your blood crossing into theirs if they are rh+. The one after delivery is to protect you so that none of their blood passes to you. Talk to your doctor. I am rh- as well and had to have both shots for all three of my children.
