Ultrasound Results

I had a 28w ultrasound done today to check the growth of my baby as I have GD. My GD is very controlled so I got a shock when the person doing the scan asks me for a second time how far along I was. I told her and she said .. "well your measuring 30w 6d and weighing 3lb already". I am just wondering how off these measurement scans be off by?

I feel like I am doing everything right, but still not doing well. ATM I am classed as high risk due to GDM and High blood pressure. If things become more high risk, they won't let me have my baby in the local hospital they will send me 4 hours away to the city to have it, and without family support (even tho I have had 5 kids) I will go bonkers/

Yes I test before breakfast... 2 hours after meals, so thats 4 times a day. I am on 500mg of metfomlin but no insulin at this present time. I see a Diabetic Educator once a fortnight. Thats why I was so surprised that my baby was big.

With GDM it is really important that the doctor know how big the baby is.

How often do they have you checking your blood sugar? Since I was diagnosed with GDM I have been working VERY closely with a Certified Diabetes Educator who is absolutely awesome. I am checking both my morning fasting blood sugar and my after meal blood sugar. I found out today that the 1 hour post meal blood sugar is the best measure of control. Even if my 2 hour check is within limits, if my 1 hour was high that is bad (I checked it at 1 and 2 because my 1 hour was high. I emailed her because I wondered which was more important.)

I'm currently on two types of insulin. One longer acting one I take once a day at bedtime plus a short acting one I inject before each meal. Yesterday was the only day that all my blood sugars have been in the desired range...

All that said...scans can be widely off (as others have noted). Hope all continues to go well for you!

Nothing ever wrong with getting another opinion.  Just remember that it's not so much innacurate measurements (although that happens too), just more that these babies grow at their own speed.  I am sure they go through growth spurts, etc.  You have a ways to go, so the fact that he or she is measuring big now doesn't mean they always will.   But hey, it's always fun to get another look at our little ones!!  But please don't worry.  It's all fine!

Thanks everyone  for the replies, yes this pregnancy is going very fast! My hubby isn't all that big, very skinny and no matter how much he eats he doesn't put weight on.(lucky thing) I have no idea how much I or he weighed as babies, but I am a big boned woman. My first baby was 6.15lb (3 weeks early), second and third were around 7.10 and my last one was 8lb. The first 3 have the same father and the last one has a different one as does the one I carry. I think I will ask for a second opinion and get another scan done/

With me I have had GD with this pregnancy and the last one. On my last sonogram which was 28 weks, my baby was measuring 3lbs 5 oz also a bit big. With my last one the sonographer said that my baby would weigh 9lbs 14oz, and sure enough he was 9lbs 13oz close enough, He prides himself being good with the measurements, He said most of the time he maybe off by ounces. I had GD with the last one well.

I also wonder if genectics play apart as well. When I was born I believe I was 7lbs and 8ozs, howeverm], when my husband was born he was 10lbs and 11oz. and he is a big guy now 6'5, 320..

So get ready you maybe having a big baby!!!!
Congrats

Hey there!  The only time measurements are really accurate is first trimester.  After that, they all grow at their own speed just as children do.  That's why they don't change your due date based on ultrasound after first trimester.  Your baby is a bit big, but I don't think he or she is anything unusual. They just come in all different shapes and sizes.  Wow, 28 weeks.  Crazy how fast time flies.  Hope your doing well.

They can b very off.   I was told my first son was gonna b over 9 lbs he was 7 lbs 11 oz.  Also with my next son I was measuring 2 weeks ahead and he was only 7lbs 6 oz.
