C sect tomorrow...baby breathing question

OK....Went to the Dr this morning, we are doing a C sect tomorrow. My little guy is a week and a half past due, I am not dilated at all, no contractions, and he isn't even "reachable". She says he hasn't dropped AT ALL and I have a very small pelvis and he's currently about 9lbs! Anyway.....While talking to the Dr, my husband brought up an issue I hadn't heard of. He said he had heard C sect babies often have difficulty breathing at first. She said the NICU is there just incase....Now I'm nervous.....Any of you ladies who have had C's, can you reassure me that maybe some of your babies didn't have breathing problems? Thanks, just a little freaked out.

Glad to hear your nurses were so helpful. It was the opposite at our hospital. The nurses tried to help, but they just didn't have that extra bit of knowledge or coaching skills. As soon as the lactation consultants came for their visits, instant help and success! So happy for you that everything is going well !!!

Thanks! They did have lactation consultants at the hospital. 2 came by my room on 2 different days and I could have called anytime I wanted help. But, i'll tell you, the nurses (both mine and Wyatt's) were even more helpful than the lactation ladies. The nurses were VERY reassuring and supportive and helpful to me mentally during those first 3 days when your milk seems like it will never show up and you feel so helpless and you ask a billion questions. It felt as though the lactation ladies were pushing an agenda and the nurses were REALLY concerned about me and the baby regardless. If ANY of you out there are nurses, THANK YOU!!!!!! You guys are GREAT!

interesting also, i never heard about the epideral not working. (good to know).
I'm glad you were able to get the breast feeding underway since you felt so strongly about it.  did they have a lactation consultant at the hospital to help you?

Wow!!! Welcome home little Wyatt and I am so glad you're feeling better!!! I'm 32 weeks and scheduled for c-section. There is a good chance I will have to have general anesthesia due to being on a blood-thinner and the risk of epidurals if I'm not off the blood-thinner long enough before the surgery is scheduled (and I have this feeling I will be going into labor early as I have had MAJOR BH contractions this weekend. Reading that you came thru general okay is a relief for me. Thanks for posting your story!!!

Well....I have my little man! He's Wyatt Lee, a 5th generation Lee, but the 1st Wyatt. I never made a birth plan per my Dr who assured me, it's a rare birth that goes according to plan and I guess she was right! I feel lucky to have gotten my little guy here safely considering the way his birthday started. I'll give the abriviated version while he sleeps in the other room peacefully. I was scheduled for a C since he was approx 9lbs and had not dropped an inch and I was not progressing either. I was just shy of 2 weeks late with him. I went in the operating room and the attempt was made to numb my back for the spinal. They couldn't get me numb. Really, I must have had 15 shots and NOTHING. I have a great private hospital, excellent experenced Dr's ect, but nothing.....The attempt was made to give the spinal without the numbness I should have had and again......NOTHING. I received a full spinal block and again NOTHING. I was able to wiggle my toes move my legs ect.. I was a little freaked out after I waited 15 min to see if it would take that I was hoping it wouldn't. I didn't want them to start cutting on me and WHAM all the feeling came back. Anyway, the decision was made to put me completely under, all the way. I woke up and 4 hours later, after all my family, I saw my baby. He was perfect, cute as can be and 10.5 lbs. His head was fully formed with no room at all the bend in the birth canal and would have caused a major problem. He also has a 16" chest to which the Dr's told me the only way to get him out naturally (nevermind the formed head) would have been to break his little coller bone. Oh GOD, I am so glad I didn't go for an induction!!!!! My Dr's told me they were glad I was under completely because he was sooooooooooooo far up, they had to use a vacuume to get him down AND there was A LOT....A LOT of blood I was told. Everyone fell in love with him, the nurses said he was the best little baby!! He was tested 3 times for Diabetes because of his size, I don't have it and I only gained 21lbs with him. All 3 came back negitive so they said lucky me, I just happen to have a big boy. I cried a few times during the 6 day hospital stay, at first because I hurt so bad with nothing to numb me, I was just on a few pain killers which didn't help so much and then 5 or 6 times because I don't have great nipples for breast feeding and I was frusterated. I thought feeding would be easier and I was ready to toss in the towel then after a few thousand times, BINGO, we got it! Slowly, I am forgetting all that hospital stuff, slowly all I remember is getting my healthy little guy brought to me. Long story not so short, sorry, but there's the update with pic's to follow in a week or so. Thanks for all the help wit the C question and BTW, HE CAME OUT SCREAMING so I was told by all the Dr's and nurses who were there so as to the question about C's having breathing problems????? I guess that should have been the least of my concerns!

I had a c-section in march - and baby has had no breathing problems at all.  they will quick show you the baby then take them back to suction them.  it was a very long 30 seconds but when you hear that cry it will be the most beautiful sound you'll ever hear!!

Thanks you guys, very much! I feel better and I have stopped crying for now...

It's great to hear all the positive feedback and I will carry it with me into L/D.

14 hours from now, I will have a very chubby, bald, pink baby boy to squeeze.

you'll be GREAT - I've had 4 c-sections & all of my babies were SCREAMERS - in fact they still are - LOL!  They'll just suck out that mucus.  Like the ladies said, c-sections are done so much - you'll do fine!!

just like cpatow, i also heard vag births help squeeze out fluid from the lungs...

c sects are done all the time, i'm sure you have nohting to worry about.

Mine was screaming in anger and breathing FINE when I had my C-section, and he was just a wee 5 lbs, 4 oz!  Healthy as an ox!

Frankly, I LOVED my scheduled C section.  So much easier than feeling those horrid labor pains and suffering for so long.  Was a piece of cake!

Thanks! I will post pics as soon as I get a chance. I do feel better, although I am sure I am dehydrated from all the tears. Luckily for me, my husband is a professional photographer so we'll get lots of awesome photos for free.

Hi!!
This will be my 3rd c-section. My doc told me that going vaginally just helps "squeeze" out some of the mucus and stuff from baby lungs but they can still breathe just fine. If they aren't able to expel all the mucus they just suction it out...no biggie whatsoever. Don't you worry!!!! Embrace tomorrow and enjoy it and welcome your sweet child "home:

I had 2 c-sections because my babies were 9 and 10 pounds and never dropped. Both were born perfectly fine with no breathing problems. I don't remember NICU being there for either delivery. Good luck and best wishes!!!

All these ladies getting to meet their little ones and I still have 10 more weeks to go!

Well, what they are referring to is that when the baby comes through vaginally it helps get out some of the mucus in the lungs that a c-section baby doesn't get that. No biggie, I promise.
