The biggest thing to watch out for, is being hydrated, WELL hydrated. Some people will react more *ahem* violently to laxative, so make sure you drink even more water than usual, just in case.

The correlation between castor oil and meconium in utero is based on unproven anecdotes.  Passing meconium is directly correlated to being overdue.
Castor oil can work, it just provides the little jumpstart you may need to get labor rolling.  That's the only thing the midwives have used to induce here, and if all the babies were pooping in the womb, I'm sure they're smart enough to make the correlation.

See what the doctor says about induction?  My daughter was 4 days over due. She passed meconium. Thank God she was okay. My son was 10 days overdue. No meconium passed.  Had to be induced with both.  Good Luck.

Why risk the health of the unborn child?

I know that castor oil is very controversial subject here.  I used castor oil under the supervision of my midwife and naturalpath Dr.  I didn't even have a bm...  I had to go to the hospital to be induced with pitocin after having ruptured membranes for over 24 hours and no labor.  I had planned on a home birth.  I think whatever decisions people make, they are entitled to make their own.  I encourage that each of us please make an informed decision as to the possible risks. What works for some may not work for others.

Good luck to you!!

So yeah, castor oil probably does work because it is a very strong LAXATIVE that will cause your stomach to contact.  And might just do that your baby too!

I have a cousin that almost died, came out sickly and green because she passed her merconium inside!

Amy1830 - using castor can cause the baby to pass meconium in the womb. That is very serious. I'm all for natural remedies and herbs, but I certainly would not risk the life of my child because I think the baby should come out. I certainly wouldn't give advice about something so controversial as the use of castor oil!

I want to use castor oil packs to help dissolve a large cyst on my ovary, but I'm too scared - and I'm only 5w pregnant. I'm scared of it possibly causing my body to contract and expell.

DO NOT USE CASTOR OIL! You don't want your baby pooping inside of you!
