What is your husband's blood type?  If he is also negative then you have absolutely nothing to worry about.   Also they test your blood to see if you've been sensitized and if you have im sure that your midwife would have said something.   Ask her just in case.   If you were not sensitized already (developed antibodies) then you'll just need to get a shot at 28 weeks & after birth.   And you can still have a water birth as long as there's nothing else going on.

And you can have a home birth but you midwife will have to bring the shot to your house within a certain time frame

They don't test the babies often because when they did they found a lot of dads weren't the father and this caused a bit of strife!!! It's easier just to give the rhesus neg mum the shot and avoid the dramas.
I just got my prophylactic dose this morning (28 weeks) and will have another shot after/at delivery.
If you are never having more children then you don't need the shot at the birth and later could become a donor whenyou make anti-D. (There aren't many donors available so this is a great thing to do and appreciated by all of us who need anti-D!)  If you want more children then getting the shot at the right time is essential to stop you forming antibodies that will possibly cause your next baby to be sick/possibly die.
I was not sure about the prophylactic dose as am not bleeding but seeing as I am rubbish at getting pregnant (5th preg & first to get to 28 weeks) and my placenta is a bit low thought I wouldn't take any chances.

They gave me the shot right after I had each of my babies. Well before they would have been able to find out their blood type.

You shouldnt have needed the shot after if they knew your babies blood type was Rh negative. As the shot is to deal with the problems Rh positive blood can cause with future pregnancies. Rh negative blood causes no such problems

Actually if you are negative you have to get the shot during your pregnancy and after regardless. I am negative and my oldest son is negative also and I still had to get both the shot during and after.

If you have Rh negative blood then you should have had a shot with your previous pregnancies. You should get one during. Then dependent on if your babies blood is Rh positive or negative you get a second shot after (you'll get 2nd shot if babies blood Rh positive). As for water birth your blood type wouldn't make a difference. I plan on a water birth and I'm also Rh negative
